  1. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The main piece of evidence came from the doctor who told the jury that the marks on the girl couldn't have come from Tom Robinson, due to his injury. Another piece of good evidence to let the jury know Tom isn't guilty, is because Tom says that Mayella jumped on him and kissed him. When tom has to lift his arm up with his right hand to put it on the bible, shows the people that he had no chance that he could have put marks on Mayella's neck. By Mayella asking Tom for help over and over again, could show the jury that she might have been trying to set something up. This could show that by setting this up she may get some money and sue Tom. This would make her not poor anymore, because right now she's poor which may lead her to plan such a crime.
Tom Robinson was found guilty. I believe he was found guilty, because of his race. Tom Robinson is a black male and the jury is white, back then the whites and blacks were going through segregation and they didn't really work together with one another. Maycomb, is a very racist town which would lead a white jury to find a black man guilty when he really isn't. The jury didn't really look over the evidence because, of his race. This is why the jury could have taken so long to come to a conclusion.

  2. Based on the evidence presented by Atticus and the faults of Mayella and Bob in their testimonies, Tom Robinson should have been proved not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence is the fact that Mayella has bruises on the left side of her body which could only be made by a left handed person. Atticus had Bob write and stated that he was clearly left handed, proving to the jury that they are in fact lying and can’t even hold up any solid evidence besides the prosecutor showing that Tom has a record and can be very strong besides the fact that one arm is mangled.

The evidence, however, did not acquit him because of the time period. In the Jim Crow South of the 1930s, even the lowest, dirtiest of the whites still hold rank over blacks. It does not surprise me because crying rape is one of the biggest crimes in the century and you will, if you are black, will almost always be convicted and sentenced to death.

  3. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Tom Robinson, who clearly explained why he was innocent. Mayella however, told a story but had no hard evidence to prove that Tom raped her. Tom's left hand would have been needed to hit her, but he cannot use it in that manor. Also, Mr. Ewell did not call a doctor when it was obviously necessary. Finally, she hesitated every time she spoke, showing that she was lying.
The court ruled against Tom because Tom felt sorry for her, which is not something a black person should do.

  4. From the evidence in the case against Tom Robinson, the jury should have found Tom not guilty. The most important piece of evidence supporting this would be from the testimony of Mayella Ewell. When Mayella was put to the stands as a witness, she hesitated under many questions and spoke about how her father reacted to the alleged rape. There was also the bruise on Mayella's left eye, which Tom wouldn't be able to do because he is missing his right arm. This evidence should have cleared Tom and he should have been found innocent.

I think the evidence did not find him guilty because the jury was full of white men so they think he is guilty just because he is colored. They may also feel bad for Mayella even though she is poor. I would grade myself a 3 on this.

  5. Based upon the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence was that Mayella had bruises on the right side of her face which made it likely that someone left handed did it to her. Other evidence was that she asked for help over and over again and made it seem like she was setting something up. Also they never called a doctor, there was never physical evidence that she was raped.
I believe he was found guilty because he was a black man with a white mans jury, in a very racist town in Alabama. Rape was a big crime especially if it had to do with a black man and a white women. He also had a past criminal history which gave them more of a reason to not believe him. They took anything they could get to find him guilty.

  6. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the hurt should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece if evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell. The fact that he was founded guilty is mind blowing but then again at the same time it’s easy to figure out why he is guilty because he’s black. Bob Ewell jokes about his daughter the whole time he’s on trial. He calls her a “hog” and jokes about her mother being dead. If his daughter was actually raped then he wouldn’t be joking at all. If anything he would have tears in his eyes and hardly be able to contain himself when he saw the man that raped her. Him being able to joke around about his daughter while they’re in trial about her being raped is disgusting and shows that it’s unbelievable. Also Tom Robinson has a crippled left hand. Bob said that Mayella was beaten on her right face. If you’re beaten on your right side of the face then a left handed person hit you. Tom Robinson obviously couldn’t have hit her if he doesn’t even have the strength and control over his hand to put it on the bible. Atticus made Bob write in front of everyone. He wrote with his left hand and that should drop a huge hint to everyone. This makes it believable that Bob was the one who hit his daughter. One of the biggest piece of evidence is that Bob didn't call a doctor. He said he "didn't think of it." If someone is raped you call a doctor to get a rape kit. If someone is beaten up very badly, you call a doctor to get that person checked out. Bob didn't do either. Not thinking of calling a doctor when your daughter was just raped and beaten up is a major factor that he's lying.

Even though all the evidence was laid out right in front of everyone's eyes, it's not surprising that Tom Robinson was convicted guilty. In the 1930s there were laws called the Jim Crow Laws. These laws were about segregating blacks from whites. Black men weren't even aloud to help up white woman if they fell down. Who would ever believe a black man over a white woman and a white man? Even if the jury did believe all of are evidence supporting that Tom isn't guilty, they wouldn't ever let a black man win over a white man/woman. Even though the Ewell's are at the bottom of the social structure, they're still ahead of blacks. As you can see it's clear to anyone that Tom Robinson wasn't guilty and Bob Ewell's trial really made it unbelievable that he was guilty. But since there is so much racism in the 1930s it was always false hope that Tom would win the case. It's not shocking that he didn't win.

  7. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of the the lack of doctors, placement of bruises, and Mayella’s personality. Even though Mayella was obviously very hurt, and in a lot of pain, Bob Ewell never called a doctor for her to be checked out. Also there was no test ever done to see if she was actually raped. The placement of bruises on her face showed that she was hit by someone who was left handed, and Bob Ewell happens to be as well. To make this more evident, Tom’s left hand was destroyed in a cotton gin at a young age. Mayella is also somewhat neglected by her father and family. She is constantly seeking attention from other people as well as Tom.
The evidence shown above should prove Tom not guilty, but he was acquitted as guilty. This is because of the Jim Crow Laws and segregation, in the 1930’s. Regardless of any evidence trying to prove him innocent, it would be hard to have a jury of 12 white men find him not guilty.
I give this a 4 out of 4 because I have all the aspects I should have, including organization, evidence, and support.

  8. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not-guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell. It was the best testimony because Bob almost gave it away that he beat his daughter. Firstly, Mayella was beaten on her left side, her dad was a lefty and Tom didn't have a left arm. Secondly, Bob was degrading his daughter and calling her names, which implied anger or dislike towards her. Lastly, Bob never called a doctor for Mayella, if Tom had raped her, he would have.
Class structure affected the Jury's decision because the Jury was white, Mayella was white and Tom Robinson was black. Since there was racial segregation, the white Jury wouldn't allow a black man to beat a white women in a court battle, otherwise it would make Tom Robinson look better than a white.
I give my responses a 4/4 because I clearly stated my opinion and backed it up with support. It is also organized and lacks grammar errors.

    1. I agree with what you are saying and I also said that it was weird how he didn't call a doctor so there was no evidence that she really was raped. Also, your response does make a lot of good points on how Tom's hand is destroyed so he couldn't have slapped Mayella.

  9. I think that Tom Robinson should have been not guilty. The first reason that I think that the he should have been not guilty because his hand was using on the one side that would have been the side that mayela was beat on so there is no way that he could have beat her. My seconded reason that I think that Tom is not guilty is that mayela could have been planing something because she always asked him to do things for her.

  10. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Mayella Ewell. She did not come right out and said that he was innocent but, during her testimony, she should how she was afraid of her father. When Mayella explain that she "'don't remember too good, but next thing I knew Papa was in the room a'standing over me hollerin' who done it, who done it? Then I sorta fainted an' the next thing I knew Mr. Tate was pullin' me up offa the floor and leadin' me to the water bucket'" (Lee 180-181). The fact that her dad was standing right over her, yelling, should make the jury realize that her dad definitely hit her so hard that she had fainted and lost some of her memory. Also, when Atticus asked her "'Do you love your father, miss Mayella?' was his next. 'Love him, whatcha mean?' I mean, is he good to you, is he easy to get along with?' He does tollable, 'cept when' 'Except when?' Mayella looked at her father, who was sitting with his chair tipped against the railing. He sat up straight and waited for her to answer. 'Except when nothin',' said Mayella. 'I said he does tollable'" (Lee 183). The credibility of this example is very low because Mayella was not able to give a direct ‘yes’ to Atticus’ question, she hesitated and ramble indicating that she was lying. Mayella’s remarks did not help prove the fact that Tom was guilty, he was just found guilty because he was a black living in 1930s.
Even though it is quite obvious that Tom Robinson is guilty, there is some statements that definitely helped the fact that he was guilty. When Tate explains that “‘it was the night of November twenty-first. I was just leaving my office to go home when B-Mr. Ewell come in, very excited he was, and said get out to his house quick, some nigger’d raped his girl” (Lee ). The fact that he said “some nigger’d” raped Mayella, hurt Tom because he is one of the only blacks that is known to go by the Ewell’s house and sometimes be invited inside by Mayella to help her with her chores. No matter what though, the reader is going to find Tom Robinson innocent, but the jury will definitely find Tom guilty because of the only fact that he is black.
I give myself a 3 because I answered all the questions with credibility and I addressed the purpose.

    1. I agree with all of this, especially with her hesitation to answer his questions fully or directly. The jury should realize that she isn't the most educated person in the world because even I have a hard time understanding her dialogue. Atticus could've used her own stupidity against her to have the truth come out, though.

      Delete
    2. I agree with them because of the evidence that both of the girl's have in there replays even though we don't know why the jury decided to put the education of the person that doesn't really have the information clearly at her response to the jury and than lie on top of the understanding of the jury's response .

  11. Based on the evidense presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence was that Mayella Ewell was beaten on the right side of her face, an injury that only a left handed man could do. Tom Robinson has a crippled left hand so there is no way that he was the one that gave her the bruises on her face. The second important peice of evidense is the fact that Mayella is afraid of her father. In the courtroom she says don't remember too good, but next thing I knew Papa was in the room a'standing over me hollerin' who done it, who done it? Then I sorta fainted an' the next thing I knew Mr. Tate was pullin' me up offa the floor and leadin' me to the water bucket'" (Lee 180-181) And when Atticus asked her "'Do you love your father, miss Mayella?' was his next. These are both clear signs that her father was the one that beat her the night of the suspected "rape" not Tom Robinson. The last piece of evidence is that the Ewells never called a doctor after the rape. If Mr. Ewell had been so concerned with his daughter after she was raped, he would have done everything he could have to help her. It is clear that he knew what really happen so he had no need to call the doctor. All of these examples from the court are signs that Tom Robinson was not guilty, but because he is black. The Ewells are the lowest respected people in Maycomb are still higher class than he is.
Although the jury does find Tom guilty of the rape charges it is because he is a black. If he was a white the jury would have quickly said that the Ewells evidence was a lie and that the victim was not guilty. The turnout of the case was known from the start, but the time it took for the jury to made a decision showed that they were effected by what atticus had to say.

  12. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell. Mayellas beaten up eye was her right eye which means that someone with a busted up left hand (Tom) couldn't have done it. Usually when someone is beaten up on their right side that means that whoever was beating them up was using their left hand. Bob Ewell was confused on this in court when he said "I don't see how me being left handed has to do with it. I am a Christ fearing man, and Atticus Finch is taking advantage of me.". This piece of evidence shows that Bob is uncredible. Also, Bob Ewell didn't call a doctor when he found his daughter. If he cared and wanted to see what really happened he would have brought her no matter how much money it costs. When Atticus asked Bob about this, Bob simply replied "I never thought of it. I never called a doctor before. besides it will be $5." This also shows that he is uncredible. Last, when Bob says "Jedge, I've asked this county for 15 years to clean out that nest down gander," it shows that Bob would do anything to try to get Tom and his family kicked out or just to get rid of them. In Maycomb, the Ewells are just above the black community when it comes to class. They don't have a lot of money, their kids don't go to school and they don't live in a nice house. By winning this trial, they won't gain much. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell because of Mayellas beaten up eye, the doctor was not called and he's always been out to get Tom Robinson.

The guilty verdict should not be surprising to anyone who knows about the Jim Crow South in the 1930s. Tom was found guilty of the crime. I believe he was found guilty because of his race. Tom Robinson is a black male and the Ewells are white. I also think it had to do with how the jury was white. In Maycomb, even the lowest class of whites were above the black community. Even if the jury believed that Tom Robinson was not guilty, he most likely wouldn't not have said that because of all the racism during the 1930's. Atticus put up a good fight but it was not shocking that he didn't win.

  13. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell. This evidence shows that Bob Ewell not only knows Tom is innocent, but is willing to joke about such a tragic event. The first piece of evidence that shows how meaningless this event is to him is when Bob compares his daughters yelling for help to a screeching hog. If he really heard his daughter screaming after being raped it would be a sensitive subject to talk about and he wouldn’t use such offensive phrases. Not only was there emotional evidence presented in Bob Ewell’s case that showed his daughter wasn’t raped, there was physical proof. Atticus proved to everyone that Tom Robinson is left handed and that it’s very unlikely that Tom would hit Mayella because the bruises were on the right side of her face. During this part of the testimony it just makes Bob look guilty for beating his daughter. Finally, there is ethical evidence to prove that Bob is hiding something. Atticus asks Bob Ewell if he called a doctor after he saw his daughter get raped and he responds “I never thought of it” (Lee 199). This is completely ridiculous and anyone who has any common sense at all would call a doctor. The first thing that a father who cares would do is call a doctor to get Mayella help. Tom Robinson was clearly innocent and the verdict was only based on racism.
The guilty verdict should not be surprising to anyone who knows about the Jim Crow South in the 1930’s. Racism was at its peak and no matter how innocent a black man was, if a white woman accused him of it, he was automatically guilty. A dirty white family who lives off welfare and does nothing for themselves was always higher on the social scale than blacks just because of their color. The class structure in Maycomb was clearly irrational and not fair. Although it’s sad, that's the way things used to be. In conclusion, social status had a huge impact on the way things were handled in the 1930’s and it was all because of arrogant racism.

  14. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. Evidence proves that tom is most likely not guilty of the rape of Mayella Ewell, especially because his left hand is useless. The fact that toms left hand is useless proves that he is most likely not the one who beat her, especially because mayella's father is left handed and according to mayella herself, he has a reputation to beat her. Tom also can be proved innocent because Mayella and her father's’ stories do not add up, and there are many holes in her father's story. Her father's story says that he found her and went to get the sheriff, however, we cannot say for sure if he found her like that, or he scared Tom away (Like Tom said) and then himself beat her, then went to go get the sheriff for possible compensation because they are poor. Lastly it doesn't help the Ewells case that no one called a doctor after she was raped, even if you don't have the funds its definitely necessary to make sure there is no real harm to ones life if you have been raped or injured, the fact that he didn't want to call a doctor only proves that a doctor is the only thing that would have proven tom innocent completely.
The jury most likely ignored all this evidence because Tom had a criminal record and he has been invited to the house on more than one occasion, because he is black, it can be assumed he was “full of lust and attacked her” or something. Its also most likely the jury may not have listened to this evidence because it was late and possibly one guy in the jury kept saying that he did it, so since it had become terribly late, everyone agreed with him just so they could go home.

  15. I think that tom based on the edvidance or lack there of should have been innocent because he did nothing to hurt miss mayella ewell his left hand is totally disabled because of an accident with a cotton gin. This makes no sense that he was guilty because there is no evidence that would support this .The only thing that they were going on was that he was a black ma in the 1930's and that he had no rights. This to a b lack man in the 30's was a death sentence.

the guilty verdict should not be surprising to anyone because of the nature of the case and the fact that Tom was black in the 30's and that because of the Jim crow laws he never had a chance. This shows dispite atticus' defense he had no chance for the beginning even though he had a good defense and the fact that there was no evidence to support the guilty verdict it happened because of the racial motivation

  16. Based on the evidence presented by the case, Tom Robinson should have found
Innocent. The three pieces of evidence would be, the lack of physical evidence, Tom's injury and the fact that Mayella flirted with Tom. When Mayella was supposedly "raped" her father did not call a doctor. This left no evidence of rape and most likely means that the rape didn't happen. When Tom was younger his left hand was injured in a cotton gin. Mayella had injuries to the right side of her face which could only get there if someone hit her with their left hand. That obviously could not have been Tom. Mayella also repeatedly flirted with Tom but he resisted and didn't flirt back. This shows Mayella might have been upset or embarrassed and this could be a reason for her to say he raped her. All of this evidence should have been reasons for him to get an innocent verdict.
Tom Robinson was convicted of raping Mayella. Tom was found guilty because of his race. During that time period blacks were considered inferior so tom was already put at an unfair disadvantage. Tom should have been found innocent. His trial was not fair and the evidence was not clearly looked over because if it was, he would have been acquitted.

  17. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Tom Robinson. Mr. Robinson’s left arm was torn up in a cotton gin when he was younger, making him virtually unable to hold down a full grown women as well as beat her and rape her. Another detail that points to Mr. Robinson's innocence is the fact that Mayella wasn’t seen from a doctor after the rape. Bob Ewell says that he “never thought of it. I never called a doctor before. Besides, it will cost me five dollars.” This seems like a poor excuse because even though they are poor, Mr. Ewell can pay that doctor back with items, like the Cunninghams. Last, he told the jury that he never came onto the Ewell property without Mayella’s permission. I feel like the jury can trust him on this because he was invited there often. There is contradicting evidence however, more evidence leans towards his innocence.

    Paragraph 2:
Three pieces of evidence that may make him guilty in the eyes of the jury is that he did have a criminal record. Any criminal record that a black man has immediately makes his violent. Second, Mayella supposedly jumped on him after he was let into the house. The jury in this case will not believe Mr. Robinson because they are going to trust the white person’s side of the story, not his. Last, at the end of Mr Robinson’s case, he said he felt sorry for her. Although empathy is a human emotion, black men are are not supposed to feel sorry for white women.

  18. I think that the most important piece of evidence found in the Tom Robinson case was that Toms left hand was mangled and could not have slapped Mayella. Also, after Mayella said that she was raped there was no doctor that came checked for evidence of rape. So no one could prove that she was definitely raped. Last, I think a big part of the case was that Mayella was asking Tom to come over and do work for her and that she liked him over because she was always lonely.
The evidence did not prove Tom innocent because he is a black man. No matter how much the evidence was in Toms favor he is still a black man and discrimination was an awful thing back then. Just like in the scottsboro trial all of the evidence pointed to them being framed. But they were still found guilty.

  19. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Tom Robinson himself. I say this because when he goes to lift his right hand the useless one slipped off the bible onto the clerks desk. Mayella's also invites Tom over to her house all the time and has him do things for her. And I think Tom knows what he did I don't think a grown man married with children would try and take advantage of a young girl, when really it's her father who is doing it.
Tom Robinson was found guilty. I saw this coming because he was a black male and back then black men were not taken too kindly. Rape is taken very seriously between a black man and a white women, this also took place in a very racist town in Alabama. So the results were pretty predictable.

  20. Taylor Nelson-
In the trial I noticed 3 main pieces of evidence that i can elaborate on. The first piece of evidence is when atticus said "did you ever set foot on the Ewell property without an express invitation from one of them" Tom said "No suh". This shows that Tom never went onto their property until Mayella told him to come help her. This helps him because he wont go into someones yard or house unless they need him... The second piece of evidence is that Mayella flirted with Tom. Mayella asked him for help and then she jumped on him and kissed him so she was the real culprate, not Tom. The last piece of evidence is that Tom said he feels bad for Mayella because of her bad family situation. Her should not be guilty because he was really just being a gentleman and did not mean any harm.

  21. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Tom Robinson. The most compelling piece of evidence was Toms Hand bring unusable. The fact that Toms had was injured in a cotton gin as a child means he could not of hit Mayella on the face. His should make the jury rethink how truthful everything that Mayella and her father said to the lawyers and the jury. This also makes it much more obvious to her that her father is the one trying to hurt her.

The evidence did not aquatint him because of the color of his skin. If the members of the jury said he was innocent them and their family's would have been targeted as "N-lovers".

  22. Based on the evidence provided to the jury they should have found tom Robinson not guilty. The most convincing piece of evidence that should have proved tom was not guilty was the statement from the doctor and atticus about how toms left hand is useless because of a cotton gin accident, and the side of mayella's face that was supposedly beaten by tom was really beaten by a person that is left handed. Which was mayella's father. But the fact that tom said he felt bad for her a white woman made the courtroom gasp. and that statement could have sealed his fate.

Tom was found guilty. Though the evidence proved that tom didn't do it it wasn't enough proof because at the time of the jim crow laws and the area they live in they jury would never find a black man not guilty even if they had a picture of the person that really do it.

  23. Based on the evidence in the case of Maryella v. Tom Robinson I found that Tom Robinson should have been proven not guilty of the crime. Tom's left hand had been destroyed in a cotton gin. Maryella had injuries from her attack however they were on her right side of her face. Tom could not have hit Maryella because his hand had been destroyed. Atticus was very clear in his argument because he wanted to prove to the court that it was impossible for Tom to hit Maryella. However Mr Ewell is left handed because he was asked to write his name. Therefore Atticus suggests that Mr Ewell had hit Mayella. Another piece of evidence against Maryella was the fact that they never saw a doctor. They could not prove that she was hurt bad because there was no doctor examination. The argument that states she didn't need a doctor. This is another important topic that Atticus stresses in the court. Mr Ewell states that he saw who committed the crime so he did not need a doctor. However the one reason I think that Tom was found guilty was from his previous criminal past. Tom Robinson is a black man however the jury probably assumed despite all the evidence that Tom did not commit the crime that he was guilty. They figured that because he had a previous criminal record that it was likely he raped Maryella Ewell. Its also understandable for Tom Robinson to take the offer that Maryella gave to Tom. Maryella asks Tom to break apart the dresser for a nickel. During this time period it was a benefit to acquire any kind of money for food and supplies. Tom has also been around to help Maryella with chores and house hold maintenance. As you can see Tom should have been proven not guilty because of the evidence was very clear.

  25. Based upon the evidence in the trial. I believe that Tom Robison should not be considered guilty. Mayella Ewell wasn't necessarily clear with her evidence and the biggest piece of evidence should have been a done deal for the jury and judge to decide who is guilty and who is not. Tom's left hand had been destroyed in a cotton gin. Maryella had injuries from her attack however they were on her right side of her face. Therefore it's not possible for Tom to have injured her if he is strictly right handed. It should have been clear that To. Did not do anything to this young girl. There was also not evidence that she was raped or hurt by Tom, someone left handed most likely did this to her.

Although, the evidence didn't find him guilty because no matter who the white person was that was in danger or harm by a black person the black person will always be guilty. White people were at a much higher rank than the colored people and were must likely always going to be considered guilty, just because of their skin color.

  26. Paragraph 1: EVIDENCE
Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson Innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony is Tom Robinson's left hand is damaged. On Mayella's face all the bruises are on the right side of her face. Since Tom Robinson caught his left hand in the cotton gin he isn't able to do anything with it. Bob Ewell writes with his left hand which is evidence that he abused his own daughter. Another piece of evidence is Bob Ewell didn't call the doctor when he found out about his daughter. He complained that he wouldn't waste five dollars on her. This proves he is a bad parent and scared that the medical evidence would show that he is guilty. The last piece of evidence is Mayella's personality towards Atticus. He asked her if she was positive that Tom Robinson took full advantage of her. She never answered the question and just said he done what he was after. Mayella never said that Tom raped her and took advantage of her at all. This three reasons show that Tom Robinson is innocence of the murder and proves that Mayella is lying to try and protect her dad against what he did to her.

    2. The evidence shown above should prove Tom not guilty, but he was acquitted as guilty. This is because of the Jim Crow Laws in the 1930’s. Twelve men had to decide Tom Robinson's fate and these twelve men happened to be all white. In this being it shows that in the 1930's they think the black community is lower than them. Proving Tom Robinson guilty shows how they didn't want to use the evidence to prove Bob Ewell guilty because a black man should never be above a white person in the 1930's.

I would give myself a 4 out of 4 because I answered both questions with details and proved my point that Tom Robinson should in fact be innocent.

  27. Based on the evidence presented in the case, i believe that Tom Robinson should not be considered guilty because Mayella Ewell wasn't necessary clear with her evidence. 1.Atticus ask her if she is possible that Tom's tock avenge of you she did answer that question directly. 2.Also because Bob Ewell can had hit his own daughter And because Mayella Ewell she always had something for tom to do he was basically welcome in her house so this is some of the evidence that i think Tom Robison is not guilty.

Although the evidence didnt find him guilty because no matter who the withe person was i will always try to find or lie in the court because hi is black the withe people had more support and more power as the withe people

  28. Based on the evidence from this case the jury should of found Tom Robinson innocent. There were multiple pieces of evidence that backed up Tom and made him seem obviously innocent. All the injuries that were given to Mayella were on the right side of her face. This means that the person that beat her up would of used their left hand. Tom Robinson has a bad left hand from the cotton gin so it is impossible for him to have been able to cause the damage that was on Mayella. Another piece of information that would of backed up Tom is that Mayella also kissed Tom on the cheek. Why would Mayella be kissing Tom if he was so violent towards her. Obviously there was proof that Mayella was interested in Tom and that something was going on because it was unheard of for a white girl to show emotion to a black man. There was no way that all of this could of been from Tom. Mayella was instigating. My last piece of evidence that would of shown that Tom would be innocent is that Mayella couldn't give a straight answer when she was asked if she was positive that Tom took full advantage of her. She said that Tom had gotten what he was after but that did not even answer the question directly asked. If Mayella can't answer a direct question that just proves that she was hiding something or lying because there is no reason that a straight answer could not have been given.
Even though there is a lot of backed up evidence to show that Tom would of been innocent, class structure in Maycomb would of really affected the verdict of this case. Blacks were at the very bottom of the class structure and were not respected really at all. Having said this, it would be very difficult for a bunch of white people to wrap their head around it and could easily just say that Tom was guilty because they don't want to think outside of the class structure and what they believe in which is that the black community is scummy and would do such things without second guessing it. Although the evidence is so obvious towards Tom and is staring you in the face that he is innocent, the jury and rest of the white people can't get over the full picture of the class structure of the blacks being at the bottom and the whites at the top. That is why even though there was so much evidence against Mayella that Tom still came out guilty.

  29. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Bob Ewell. I think Atticus did a great job of cornering Bob Ewell and convincing the jury that he in fact was more guilty at beating Mayella than Tom! Atticus askes Bob if he is right handed or left handed and then has Bob write his name on a piece of paper showing that he is left handed in front of the whole court room. Tom Robinson has an injured left hand which makes him only eligible to use his right hand. Mayella has injuries to the right side of her face which would be more likely to come from a left hand and in the case it would more likely be Bob Ewell. This piece of evidence is credible because it's clear that Bob is left handed so he could have easily been the one who beat his daughter. Another piece of evidence is when Mayella indirectly answers Atticus's question. Atticus asks Mayella if Tom took advantage of her and she says that "he done what he was after." This is not credible because Atticus asked her a yes or no question and she didn't answer it yes or no, this shows that she could have easily been trying to avoid the question because she didn't want to answer it. In Tom's testimony, he says that Mayella was always calling him over and this shows that he wasn't an unwelcome guest to the Ewell household. This evidence helps Tom because it shows the jury that Mayella obviously liked Tom because she kept asking him to come over and help her out. I think Tom was clearly innocent in this case because the majority of the evidence helps him out. The Ewell's are the poorest family in town, at the bottom of all classes and a stunt like this could have easily been to get them money.

The evidence did not acquit Tom because he's black. Even though most of the evidence is in Tom's favor, it was nearly impossible for a black man to win a case against a black woman during the 1930s. It's not surprising at all that Tom did not win this case, the color of his skin definitely held him back from being innocent.

  30. In the book Tom is charged as guilty but I would disagree because Atticus proved on many accounts that it wasnt really possible for Tom to beat Mayella and it was almost indefinitely Bob that did it. Atticus asked her "'Do you love your father, miss Mayella?' was his next. Here Atticus proves that Bob is mean to Mayella when he drinks and likely beats her, it also suggests that he probably is the same way when he isn't drunk. I would say the only way this is credible is if you realize the truth that he does beat her and is mean to her but she doesnt give a direct yes answer to Atticus or the courtroom. Furthermore Atticus gets Bob to write his name on paper where it is revealed that bob is left handed "I don't see how me being left handed has to do with it. I am a Christ fearing man, and Atticus Finch is taking advantage of me." that evidence is credible because Atticus proves it right in front of the whole courtroom that Bob is left handed after Atticus makes his point that since Mayella was beaten and her bruises were on the right side of her face it is most likely that a left handed person beat her. That couldnt have been Tom because his left hand does not even work due to a cotton gin accident where almost his whole left arm was basically crippled. The last piece of evidence is when Mayella has her little outburst because it shows that she might be guilty of something to act like that because if she wasnt then theres no reason to act that way.

The evidence probably did not acquit Tom Robinson because of the Jim Crow South that they were living in which totally influenced the decision. Even though Atticus made a compelling case and a compelling speech to go along with it all the rascists couldnt ignore the fact that Tom felt bad for Mayella which suggested that he had it better off than Mayella and for him to feel bad for her made a lot of people angry.

  31. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty. The most compelling pieces of evidence came from Atticus's questioning. First of all, Atticus found and showed to the jury that Tom Robinson only had his right hand available since his left was crushed, so he couldn't have punched Mayella with his right hand because she was hit on the right side of her face. This piece of evidence supports Tom Robinson, showing that he couldn't have hit her and this was a proven fact as well as credible because it was visible and made sense. Another piece of evidence was when Atticus identified that Mr. Ewell was left handed which meant that he was a candidate to punch Mayella because she was hit on the right and he was left-handed. This was credible because Mr. Ewell faithfully admitted that he was left handed so what Atticus said was true. The third piece of evidence from Atticus was when he asked Mayella if she was sure that Tom took full advantage of her. She replied that he did what he had to do. This showed that Mayella was answering the question inderectly and circumventing it because although she said he did what he had to do, that doesn't mean that what Tom had to do was to rape her. This shows that Mayella wasn't credible at this point and overall this piece of evidence was in favor of Tom Robinson. Overall, with this help of Atticus and his evidence, by right, Tom Robinson shouldn't have been guilty in this case.

In the end, Tom Robinson was actually called guilty, even with all of Atticus's evidence, he was still guilty. Though, this didn't happen by coincidence, it happened because the case was unfair from the start. Basically, during the 1930's the Jim Crow laws created a class structure where black people were inferior and had much less power. On the other hand, the white people were dominant and had much more power, so basically they could do what they wanted and they could get out of a lot of things. Even the poor and trashy Ewell's were higher in class than blacks. Overall, this type of class structure at the time created a sense of unfairness in many court cases involving blacks especially this one. Altogether, Tom Robinson wasn't guilty in this case not because Atticus's evidence wasn't good enough or by coincidence, but because of the uneven class structure in America during the time. Today, if the same court place took place, Tom Robinson would have been called not guilty without a doubt.

  32. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence came from the testimony of Mayella Ewell where she did not answer several questions directly. When Atticus had asked if Tom had taken full advantage of her, she replied by saying how he had done what he had come for. This was a yes or no question that she did not answer directly which shows she isnt telling the truth. Another piece of compelling evidence came from Tom Robinson's testimony where Atticus made him catch an object with his right hand. When Atticus asked him to catch it with his left hand, Tom said he cant. This is because his left arm was caught in a Cotton Gin when he was 12 and he hasn't been able to use that arm since. The final piece of compelling evidence was from Mr. Ewell's testimony when Atticus made him write his name and discovered that he was left handed. Since Mayella was beat up on the right hand side of her face, it meant that her attacker had to be left handed. This is impossible for Tom since he cant use his left arm, but suggests that Mr. Ewell was her attacker.

This evidence did not prove Tom innocent mostly because it was a white man's word against a black man's word and it took place in the 1930's Jim Crow south. This pretty much meant that if something happened between a white man and black man, the white man would always be right even if all the evidence made the black man right. It was also on an all white jury, which means no black people were allowed on it. If they had found him innocent, it would indicate a black man was above a black man when at the time they liked to feel the blacks were below them. In the 1930's a black man should never be above a white man, which is why the jury decided the way they did.

  33. Based on the evidence presented in the case, the jury should have found Tom Robinson not guilty The most compelling pieces of evidence came from the testimony of Tom Robinson himself and Mayella Ewell. Tom should not have been found guilty plainly from the fact the he is left hand due to his right arm have torn muscle ligaments from a injury when he young in a cotton gin. Thus making it nearly difficult and impossible for Robinson to beat Mayella Ewell since she had bruise on left side of her face and she had choking marks around her neck. Again nearly impossible for Tom Robinson to do because of his injury. Mayella’s testimony whoever provide even more evidence of why he should not have been convicted. When the judge asks Mayella several questions on who had beaten and how. Mayella does not give clear answer on several of these questions and ends up crying her eyes out on each one. The fact the she can’t pull it together and to answer a few questions is really sketchy you’d think she would want to answer and put the man that did this in jail. By the looks of it Mayella just doesn't answer because she hasn't have the answer. If she doesn't have answer is there really crime he can be convicted of if she’s refusing to answer question about what happened.

  34. To me the most compelling evidence from the trials is that Tom Robinson has a crippled left hand. Obviously he couldn’t have hit her if he can't even have the strength or control to keep his hand on the bible. But Bob Ewell is left handed. Atticus makes him write his name and Bob writes it with his left hand, clearly showing that he is guilty of beating his daughter. Another piece of evidence was that Bob compares his daughters yelling for help to a screeching hog. If he had actually heard his daughter screaming after being raped he wouldn’t use such offensive phrases. Its your daughter, why would you compare your own daughter to a screeching hog. Not nice. Lastly the biggest piece of evidence is that Bob didn't call a doctor. Bob said he "didn't think of it." If someone is raped you call a doctor. If someone was beaten up, you call a doctor to see if they were okay.
Even though there is a lot of backed up evidence to show that Tom would of been innocent, he is black, and during that time period any crime that a black person was involved in they would have been committed of the worst punishment. This punishment is not surprising though, considering the Jim Crow law's and the Scottsburo trial.
I would give myself a 4 out of 4 because i have 3 pieces of evidence that i backed up very well.

  35. Based on the evidence, the jury should've found Tom Robinson not guilty of the crime he's committed. He was innocent. The most compelling piece of evidence
that made Tom's case apparent he was innocent was how Mayella's bruises were caused by a left-handed man, and since Bob Ewell is a leftie and Tom's left hand is crippled, Tom couldn't have beaten Mayella at the event of the crime. The fact that Tom has a busted left hand also supports more pieces of evidence that hurts Mayella's case against him. Tom couldn't have both grabbed Mayella by the neck with one hand and beat her with the other, nor could Tom had taken advantage of Mayella and raped her with only one working hand. It's illogical and especially something incompetent for anyone with one hand to be able to physically commit this crime.
Unfortunately, the evidence did not acquit him in a Jim Crow law-segregated South. Racism was abundant. As according to Atticus', in this era of racism, a white man's word is essentially superior to a black man's.
But besides that, in this tired, small old town of Maycomb, acquitting a black man of a rape crime, no matter how innocent he was, is worse for the town than carrying out the guilty verdict. If Maycomb acquitted him, the town would be piled by media and news reporters, bringing a lot more controversy about trial from outside the town than inside of it that would destroy the town's general harmony. In short, it was better for Tom to be charged guilty to protect the town that wasn't ready to be an alleged leader in starting racial equality movements.

I give my response 5 out of 4, I followed the prompt but also gave an extraordinary insight to the big picture behind the guilty verdict of Tom Robinson.

  36. Based on the evidence that was collected tom roberson should've been found insin for many reasons. First off his left hand was damaged when he was young so he has no use for this hand really. And Mayela right side was all bruised up meaning she was punched from a left handed person. When Bob and his daughter told their stories they didn't match up at all they were both saying different things. And if Bob was there why didn't he call a doctor to make sure his daughter was ok.
