  2. In my poem, it involves Dolphus Raymond and how he thinks of his life and how the town does since he is married to a black woman and has a mulatto child. Dolphus Raymond has a little part in the book that represents a lot. He is considered to be a drunk that walks around town because he has such a bad life, but in reality, the town believes that he is a drunk to explain why he is married to a black woman. Raymond actually loves his life but he puts out that picture to try to give the town a reason for his actions who cannot except the truth. It just goes to show how racist and how ridiculous some of the people in the town can be because they don't want to believe the truth. The idea that "societies are governed by spoken and unspoken codes of behavior" helps explain Dolphus Raymond and the town's point of view because town refuses to see that someone is actually happy with a black wife. A part of the poem that best helps this idea is "but he's a drunk so that explains a lot - people just can't handle the truth". The images are mostly about how Dolphus Raymond and his wife are happy with who they are and not what color they are.

    1. You used pictures well. The topics were very original compared to everyone else. The line that said that he was married to a black woman, and he had a lovely life was pretty good. I thought it captured it well.

  3. This poem in two voices explores the relationship between White and Black. This book is based around White vs Black. It's important to the novel, because that's basically what it's about. Blacks are scared, neglected, alone, 'unequal', abused, and low in self-confidence. White's are happy, equal, not alone, treated fairly, and high in self-esteem.

Why did you choose the images?

Because they showed the relationship between the blacks and whites, and how we're the same.

Which lines best capture the relationship between the characters? Explain.

'I can get away with crimes.'
'And I'll be blamed for them.'

This most matches with them because Bob got away with it, and Tom got blamed for his crime.

Which of the following Essential Understandings are best illustrated by your poem:

That Black vs White was a very common issue back than.

    1. The pictures depicted it well. The one thing I would add, is that you didn't do line under line, it was kinda confusing at first, but I got it after the first one. The line where it's talked about him doing stuff she asked him to do things.

  5. Mayella Ewell is a girl that lives in Maycomb like Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a black man that was just trying to help Mayella move some furniture. Mayella is lying about tom beating her when her father did it. Tom is trust worthy and doesn't have a bad reputation at all. Mayella is from a family of scum. They cannot keep jobs, none are educated, and they are very poor. The relationship of the two people is very hostile and unfriendly. The line "nobody believes me. Everybody believes me" shows the fact that no one other than the black community and the finches want to take the side of Tom because he's black.

  6. This poem is about Atticus and Bob Ewell deliberating at the court house they are deliberating on the innocence of Tom. They are important because they are decidin weither or not this man lives or not. The role they play in the novel Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout and he is the great equalizer. Bob Ewell is the town scum but some how he holds rank over the black men but he is just over the threshold that they have.
The images that I chose for the presentation I chose those because they really show how bad that Toms hand was. They are not the exact hand but they are an example of what his hand may have looked like if they had any sort of accurate x-ray in the twenties that is possibally what the doctors may have had to deal with. The second picture that I have is what the after math of someone getting their hand cought in a cotton gin. This shows that his hand was mangled and he did not have the use in this hand http://animoto.com/play/3XrSPnOtPib5lP0Yb4yUzQ

  7. The characters in my two-voice poem are the personified versions of culture and ethics. The roles they play in the novel are themes that are in the work of fiction and in real life. During the Great Depression and well before the 1960s, racism, segregation, and discrimination were road runners in America. It was especially harsh on those in the depression because everyone except the rich was experiencing the troubling times. This was the culture of the south especially compared to the north. The ethical portion of that period was not what it is today. It was ethical to treat a black man with disrespect or to send them to the back of a bus. It was ethical to force them to go to the bathroom in a separate room or drink from a separate, dirty fountain.

I chose the themes because they are extremely important to the novel and the story it tells. They're still relevant today, though not as prominent and within a different context. People are still raising their kids with racist ideals, even in this school, and it is great to understand the giant wrong doing with have done to human beings equal to us. Society is what it is by the governing of culture and the ethics taught to it.

  8. The two people i used for my two person pome is the black population and the white population. The role they played in the novel was that in this time segregation was growing strong between white and black people. The people are important to the novel because the novel shows how people were treated based on color.

My poem shows the difference between the white people and the black people, How they blacks were treated worse and were sader. And how the white people were full of hope and wonder. But in the end they are all the same on the inside so why treat anyone like they are not alike. “People see the world through the lens of their own experience and background.” this would probably fit my video the best because we are all the same no matter what we look like.

    1. I like how you show that the blacks had a lower living standard and it was harder for them to survive and whites had it easy compared to the blacks. The pictures that show this relationship are the ones with the "luxury" and the "shacks".

    2. I agree with Trevor I really liked your animoto it was very well put together. I loved your use of images especially the two female black and white facing away from each other good job. I also liked your music choice I felt that also fit your poem very well!

  9. My two voice poem is about black v. white. This is an important part in the book because through out it there is a constant battle between the two. For example the blacks want to be equal and the whites do everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen. The qualities the blacks have is they are always being blamed for things they didn't do and the whites let them take the fall for them. This is just like how Tom was being blamed for raping Mayella when he didn't do it.
My poem was mostly about how the blacks want to fit in but the whites wont let them. Some images I used to show this was blacks and whites holding hands and then people fighting to show both sides of what they wanted. The lines that best capture this message would have to be "We want to be friends(Black)" "We will never be friends(White)". This shows the different things that both of them want. That is what my poem is about.

    1. I like how you show the difference between how blacks act and how whites act. “We want a change. We will never change.” shows that the blacks want to try to get along and they’re not going to hold grudges but the whites don’t feel that way.

  10. My poem contemplates Blacks and Whites and their relationsihp together involving work loads and social class. The black people were subjected to harsher work enviornments, less pay, and were social outcasts to white society. The white people of the time, were, compared to the black people, rich in a way. Whites had social fabrics that the blacks could not acheive without equal rights, and regular pay because there was no descrimination. The white people would suppress the blacks in every way they could, which also was a main part of my poem.
My poem is especially successfull at its description at the end were it explains that to survive, the blacks had to work, and the whites would basically thrive because the blacks would work for them, eventhough they could do the work themselves.

  12. This poem in two voices features Atticus and Aunt Alexandra. Atticus is Scout's father while Aunt Alexandra is her Aunt. Each play a very important role in raising Scout in her later years. However the way that they raise Scout is opposite and conflicts each other. Atticus chooses to be a very laid back father and lets his children choose how they would like to act but will intervene if they start to misbehave. Alexandra on the other hand follows strict rules and makes Scout obey them to the word.

I chose these images because it shows a nice contrast between freedom and structure. In parenting, there is always a fine line between being too strict and being too free with your children. The line 'Fill your own shoes' and 'fill in mine' feels like the most important and summarizes the different views Atticus and Alexandra have when raising Scout.

  13. This poem in two voices describes the relationship between blacks vs. whites, during the time of this novel, mainly during the trial scene. It talks about all the rights and freedom that whites have, while the blacks are segregated from them. It also gives their opinions on everything that happened in the trial between Tom and Mayella, as well as what they think of Atticus and Bob Ewell.
I chose the images I did, to show, or at least give hints, as to what the line of the poem was saying. It also helped differentiate between what each races opinion was. I think my best images were the ones of the courtroom for both race, because it gives a good visual of what they both see. My poem best represents, ‘Societies are governed by spoken and unspoken codes of behavior.’

  14. This poem in two voices explores the relationship between blacks and white and shows the progression of our relationship. This is important because you need to understand the racism and prejudice of the 1930s. It is also the platform of the book. Blacks were caring and respectful. The whites were not as caring and respectful, especially towards the blacks.

The pictures in my poem showed how racism and prejudice are the platform of the book and how we now think of each other as the same. "I think we can get along. I'll try." shows the progression between the blacks and the whites and how we can understand each other better by considering their experiences, background and perspectives.

  15. This poem in two voices features Atticus and the Jury. It describes the racism and unfairness of the trial. It portrays Atticus as being a leader and not being afraid to stand up for what’s right. The Jury is important because it represents the entire Maycomb county which are all racist and arrogant.
In my animoto video I chose images that showed mostly Atticus’s point of view that all men are equal and deserve a justified trial. One very important line that captures the relationship between the characters is when the jury says “white men are superior.” This is what most white people thought which is what caused the whole situation. The essential understanding best illustrated by my poem is “societies are governed by spoken and unspoken codes of behavior.” This is portrayed in my poem because most people are unspokenly racist and although the jury can’t admit it, they are unfairly biased based on Tom Robinson’s color.

  16. In my poem I used Atticus and Tom Robinson and what they would say before the trial. Tom is asking questions to Atticus about why he's helping him because he is a white male. Both of these characters are important to the novel because Tom Robinson was the main person in the trial. He was accused of rape and Atticus was by his side as his lawyer trying to help him. Tom seemed very honest and brave during the trial and showed that he is a good person. Atticus was especially brave because he stood up for Tom and tried to help him. I chose these images because it looks like Atticus and Tom are talking and that's what they're doing in my poem. Towards the end of my poem Tom thanks Atticus for what he is doing and it really shows their relationship. The Essential Understanding that best describes my poem is we can understand others better by considering their experiences, background, and perspective. Atticus is trying to get more information out of Tom and sees that he is a genuinely nice person. Atticus is standing up for Tom and needs to know more about him.

  17. This poem in two voices features Tom Robinson and Mayella. It describes the relationship between them and what happened that lead up to the court case and why Tom ended up in jail, charged with rape. Mayella and the rest of her family are important to the novel because it shows how racist the people of Maycomb can be and Tom represents what happens to the black people in Maycomb when something happens and the people need someone to blame.
In my poem the main voice is Mayella because she caused the problems between herself and Tom. She invited Tom into her house and always had him help her with work around the house and then she decided she wanted to have a better relationship with Tom and told her to kiss him and he refused but she grabbed him and then Bob saw them and beat Mayella and said Tom raped her. This created the biased and unfair trial that got tom sent to prison. This also shows the unspoken rules that black people are under even the worst people in society even if they work hard and do everything right

This poem in two voices features Tom Robinson and Mayella. Bob is put on trial due to a rape crime charge against Mayella and Mayella is the one who is saying that Bob raped her and that she is the "victim" . These two characters are important to the novel because the trial they are in is what the whole book is based off of. Tom's innocense of the crime and obvious evidence to show he is innocent but still gets sent as guilty is just showing how serious the racism problem was in Maycomb and how unsignificant someone's life in the black community was compared to a whites. Mayella is important to show the white side and how far the white community will go to prove that the black community is wrong and the white is so superior. Mayella is lonely and wants nice things but can't afford them. She just wants company. Tom is a very hard worker and is very honest and loyal.
My poem shows each side of the trial basically and what Mayella would say verses what Tom would say. The line that would best capture the relationship between the two characters is when it says "stop this please miss. It will be over for you soon". This best describes their relationship because Tom doesn't understand why he was being set up for this and he knows he is innocent but even though Mayella is lying and she knows it she is saying it will be over for him soon because the white community will always win. I chose the images I did because it was a picture of Tom and Mayella who are being featured in my Animoto. We can understand others better by considering their experiences, backround, and and perspective best describes my Animoto because you can understand where each person is coming from even though one side may be right and one may be wrong. By considering each of the people's backrounds and experiences you get a full understanding of what each person was thinking.

  19. My two characters are Atticus and Bob Ewell, the both have important roles in the novel because Atticus is essentially a sub main character along with Bob even though one is more so a good person and the other could be considered a villain of sorts. They are important to the novel because they play key parts in the big trial of the book, one being the person to defend the accused and the other a prime suspect of the case. Atticus possesses good qualities those being fair and just and somewhat caring and kind to others. Bob Ewell posseses some poor qualities those being disrespect towards others especially those of different color. I chose the images I did because i thought the depicted the characters well from the trial, I think the lines that best capture the relationship between the two is towards the end. People see the world through the lens of their own experience and background: I would say Bob Ewell is the biggest example of this because he was raised to hate different colored people . http://animoto.com/play/9ZhFVLK0rN2OyF9JN5nSDw

  20. My poem was between Atticus and the black community. The black community was thanking him for helping Tom and Atticus was apologizing for him being convicted of the crime. Atticus is the lawyer that was defending Tom Robinson. The black community represent all the black people that were thanking him for trying his best in the case. A quality that the black community is grateful to Atticus.

My poem was about how Atticus was mad about the verdict of the tryal and the black was thanking him for defending the truth agent impossible odds. I chose pitcher from the tryal that were imported to the conviction of Tom.

  21. This Two Voice poem explores the relationship between the views and beliefs of Boo Radley and the townspeople of Maycomb. While Boo Radley lives in a world of isolation away from the racist town of Maycomb, the townspeople do not believe in any wrongs with segregation.
I used images relating to segregation and the theme of my poem. The line that really shines is "But I'm sure they'll change" to "We will never change" since the South in itself accepted racism, and any change in that didn't seem to come anytime soon. Through this, the townspeople see the world through lenses of their own experience and background, ignoring the other side.

  22. This poem in two voices features Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is the black man in the novel that gets accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Bob Ewell is the father of Mayella Ewell, who defends his daughter and tries to persuade the jury that Tom raped Mayella when in fact more of the evidence pointed to him. These characters are significant to the novel because Tom is a main character in the book who was convicted of a crime he most likely did not commit. He’s also very significant to the novel because he’s black; the fact that he was black changed the whole case because it immediately made him guilty. Bob Ewell is important to the novel because he is a main character who lies to the court room and affects the other characters like Atticus, Jem, and Scout incredibly throughout the book. Tom possesses the quality of being a hard worker, honest, trustworthy, and someone who is always a helping hand. This was shown because almost every day when he passed the Ewell household, Mayella would call him over to help and he always did. Bob Ewell possesses the qualities of being a liar, shady, and has awful work habits. We can tell he’s lazy because he has no motivation to get a job that will actually help him provide for his family.
I choose three images for my video. One of them was a left hand, because in my opinion, this was the biggest piece of evidence that was represented throughout the whole trial because Mayella had bruises on the right side of her face which would mean that the person who attacked her would have to be left handed. Tom Robinson got his right hand caught in a piece of equipment that made his left hand incapable to use. Bob Ewell on the other hand was left handed, Atticus proved this to the whole courtroom by making him write his name on a piece of paper and he wrote it with his left hand. The lines that best capture the relationship between the characters are when Tom says “I always helped Mayella” and Bob says “I never help her.” This was a good way to capture the relationship of Tom and Bob in relation to the court case because it showed that Tom always helped Mayella when Bob never did and he only acted like he did when he wanted to frame Tom Robinson.
People see the world through the lens of their own experience and background. I think this essential understand best illustrates my poem because Tom Robinson has to see the world through the lens of being a black man and this only has negative effects for him during the trial because even though he had a great lawyer, he was pretty much guilty at the start because of the color of his skin.

  23. This poem in two voices features,Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson is the black man Mayella accuses of raping her in the story. In reality, Mayella was lonely and looking for Tom to do stuff with. Tom didn't let anything happen except Mayella kiss him which he knew was wrong. When Bob Ewell, Mayellas dad saw, Tom ran. When they went to court, Tom told the truth but because he was black no one believed him and they couldn't let him win even if they did. Mayella, Bob and Heck Tates stories didn't quite match up but that didn't matter since they were white. In my poem, Tom is talking to Mayella about how she knows the truth and she knows that he didn't do it, he did nothing more than she asked. He asks her why shes doing this and Mayella tells him that she was lonely. Mayella knew that she could get away with it since he was black and no one would believe him. It shows the relationship between Tom and Mayella towards what happened.

I choose the images I did because the one of Tom shows how he doesn't look nervous and how he knows that he's innocent. The one of Mayella shows that she's nervous and a little crazy. She doesn't really know what's going on. The one of Atticus questioning Bob Ewell shows that hes angry. In my poem, the lines that best capture the relationship between Tom and Mayella are "I did what you asked me to, miss... That's not what they saw" and "You kissed me... You raped me" These are the best lines because they show the two sides of the story. They show that Mayella is going off of what her dad and Heck saw and what they think happened. I think my poem is best illustrated by the Essential Understanding of Societies are governed by spoken and unspoken codes of behavior. I think this because if in this case they were going off of what Bob and Heck saw and Mayella was lying about the real situation. If she had spoken up the whole situation could have been different.

  24. This poem in two voices features the Black and White relationship it features how black people was trying to became free but the whites did want to have a different color skin they were afraid to see how everything turns un with both races became together also shows the progression of our relationship. It is also the platform of the book. Blacks were caring and respectful. The whites were not as caring and respectful, especially towards the blacks.
the picture that chose show who black and whites were not equal and how they were separate from each others also how blacks were keep trying to fight for freedom and equality they show america that they also are human and they can do somethings as a white person after everything happen many whites started to support blacks they want them to became free and equal to everyone.

  25. My two characters in my two voices poem are Auntie Alexandra and Scout. Scout is the narrator in the book so she is pretty important when it comes to the novel. Auntie Alexandra is important to the novel because she is atticus’ sister and pushes scout to her woman-like levels. Together they have a toxic bond, neither is ever happy around the other. Scout and Alexandra are both very stubborn and always want their way.
I chose the images that I chose because they go with the sentences that used. For example the stop sign goes with the Stop! sentence because it means stop. The lines that best describe the relationship between Alexandra and Scout are, “I wish you weren’t here” This explains Alexandra and Scouts relationship because neither of them want to be near the other. http://animoto.com/play/rdhVm831XXXWYEqufO8jwQ

  26. The two character I used in my two voice poem were Mayella and Bob Ewells. Mayella is a young girl who is supposidly abused by her single father. she has no mother she died . Mayella has several younger sibling. Mayella and her father are sueing Tom Robinson for supposidly raping Mayella. Bob Ewells Is a rash rude and very tempered man. Mayella on the other hand is a over worked young girl and has take care of her self and her. This poem in two voices describes the realationship Mayella and Bob Ewells share because the poem reflects who Bob Abuses Mayella not only phsysically but verbally also.I choose these images because I felt they represented Mayella inner depressed feeling for her father and her realization of her shame of lusting after a black guy. I think the line that capture the relationship between Bob and Mayella would be " Daddy please stop it. You're good for nothing" This because I think it really describes what they are truely think and all Mayella wants her father to do is stop treating her like dirt where for her father that'sall he thinks she is nothing but dirt. I feel through my vide I can now understand Mayellas and Bobs realationship from the background, and picture I used.

  27. This poem in two voices explores the relationship between Tom Robinson and the jury. Tom Robinson is the defendant in this trial. He is falsely being accused of raping a white woman. He was only trying to help the woman but she came on to him. Her family and her turned it around on him and said he raped her. There was no evidence that supported the statement that Tom Robinson raped the girl. It’s clear as day that he was innocent. The jury had the job to do justice and do what’s right, but they didn’t. The jury knew that Tom Robinson wasn’t guilty and that he didn’t do anything wrong but just because of his color they convicted him. The jury believed that they were doing something wrong if they let a black man win over a white man/family. These two characters are important to the novel because it shows how racism affects everything during this time period. Just because Tom was black the jury was willing to ruin his family, his life, their oaths and the justice system. It’s also important to the novel because it shows who really doesn’t care about race in Maycomb. Qualities that Tom Robinson possess are a gentleman. Which is the quality that got him into this huge mess. Also other qualities that Atticus describe Tom as is “quiet, respectable, and humble” (Blogger Closing Argument). Tom is innocent and has a lot of patience as well. He’s understanding by the fact he already knows his faith. Tom is a true gentleman and kind man that deserves nothing but good to happen to him and unfortunately that’s not what happens. The jury’s qualities are not original, dishonest, and understanding. They are very understanding about the fact that Tom is innocent and that’s why they take so long to make up the verdict. But they are dishonest and won’t break the status quo because they convict him guilty. The relationship between Tom and the jury is simple. The jury definitely feels bad for Tom but they could never get by the fact that he’s black. Which is 100% wrong in every way possible but it’s understandable because of the time period.

    1. My poem is the voices between Tom Robinson and the jury. Tom is so confused and he doesn’t understand why the jury would convict him guilty. The jury knows everything Tom is saying is true but they also know that his color is black and they can’t look past that. I chose the first image of the black hand and the white hand almost touching each other because it’s like they are so close to touching each other but not yet. The jury is so close to saying that Tom is innocent but they won’t yet. Just like the two hands because they’re so close to touching but just not yet. I chose the image of Tom Robinson crying because it shows the emotion behind him. He’s a strong black man that no one would be expecting to cry but when he starts to cry it pulls at your emotions and makes you realize how badly this is going to affect him and his life. I picked the picture of the jury because it shows the type of jury. They are all white and all males. They look to be like they’re interested in the trial as well. The picture of the gavel is used because when I think of court and trials that’s the first image that pops up in my mind. Lastly I picked the picture of Atticus Finch leaving the courtroom and all the black people in the room standing up because this was a very important scene in the book. It shows how much the black community respects Atticus. He’s such a good man and it was very rare to find a man like him back then who stuck up for what he believed in. He gave that trial his all and never backed down. It stinks that it didn’t work out in his favor but it still means a lot that he never gave up on Tom and the right thing.

The best Essential Understanding that illustrates by poem is “Societies are governed by spoken and unspoken codes of behavior”. This best illustrates my poem because Tom Robinson isn’t guilty but because of society and the spoken and unspoken codes of behavior, the jury convicts him guilty. In this society being racist is most common and the unspoken/spoken rule is that blacks are under every white person no matter what. Having a black man beat a white man is not okay in this society. Racism is basically unspoken rules that everyone lived by back then.
