  1. Ruby and Victoria were what some would call no very classy women. Both of the women came from the slums, where they didn't make much money at all. Then both women started to become prostitutes. They needed the money because they were poor so they wanted the money from a rape case.

  2. 1. Briefly describe the two women who accused the Scottsboro defendants of rape, especially their socio-economic background.
They were low class white women.

    2. Briefly describe these young men, especially their socio-economic background.
They were young boys from 12-17 who train-hopped.

    3. How might the socio-economic background of both the accusers and the defendants have helped shape the events of the case?
Even though the women were poor, they're still white so they have the upperhand against a black person.

  3. Ruby Bates and Victoria Price were very poor. The first article says they lived “in a poor neighborhood of Huntsville and worked in the mills” (People & Events Ruby Bates). During the Depression the mills only had Bates and Price go in to work five or six days a month. They both were prostitutes and were “hoboing aboard a Southern Railroad freight train” (People & Events Victoria Price). Ruby Bates was seventeen years old and not making a lot of money. Bates testified that they wasn’t any rapes. Victoria Price was twenty-one years old when she accused the men of raping her. But Victoria Price never said the story was false. She kept with it even years later when she was suing NBC after a movie they did based on the trials. The girls were scared they were going to get into trouble because they were prostitutes crossing state borders so they were willing to risk other people’s lives to make theirs better. If they weren’t poor I doubt this would happen. Especially if they weren’t poor they wouldn’t be prostitutes.

  4. The two women in the Scotsborro trials, Ruby Bates and Victoria Price, were poor and low class. They were prostitutes who accused boys of rape because they were afraid of going across the state border. They were at the bottom of the socio-economic status but still above blacks.

One of the boys accused, Olen Montgomery, was much harder working than the two women. He was at the very bottom of the social class because he was black but he was very literate and smart and only did things to improve himself.

The two woman, being at the bottom of the social class probably shaped the case because someone of higher social status wouldn't waist their time on them. The fact that all the boys were black also adds to the case because it is the only people that the women knew they could accuse and win even though they were completely innocent.

I give myself a 4/4 because I read and understood the text about the people and gave specific evidence in my answer.

  5. The economic status of the two girls is they were poor young girls who worked in a cotton mill in their home town of Huntsville they did not get regular work they worked 5 or 6 days a month during the depression. The boys were accused becasue they were hoboing they hopped the same train as thetwo girls and two white men when the men and the teens got into a fight they stopped at the town of scottsboro where they were arrested and thrown in jail with fighting and "rape" charges. I do believe that the social status of these boys had a lot to do with what they got convicted with this is why they got the rape charges even though there was no evidence of rape on either f the women and the fact thing that the women were in a seperate car. I think my responce would be a 3 becasue I do not think I did the best job but I think I accomplished my purpose

  6. Ruby Bates and Victoria Price were both in a poor neighborhood of Huntsville and worked in the mills. Price was twenty-one, will Bates was seventeen. In Huntsville, blacks and white played together, drank together and even sometimes slept together. She had once been arrested for hugging a black man in public. Bates was the quieter of the two and let Price do most of the talking with her version of events. Price and Bates worked in the local cotton mills when there was work which was about five or six days a month. Price supplemented her earning with prostitution because she was making $1.20 a day which was half of what she had been making before the Depression.
Olen Montgomery was born in Monroe, Georgia. He mad it through fifth grade and was the only defendant of the nine teenagers who could write. He had a cataract in one eye and couldn't see well, he was on route to Memphis looking for new eyeglasses. He didn't know any of the other young men and boys, but was sentenced to death with them. The economic backgrounds of the young men and boys could have helped shape the case because of how poor they were and they were all running off for something and it could be accused that they took advantage of the girls out of boredom on the train.
I give myself a 3, I did all the work and answered all the questions.

  7. 2. The boys were black, and racism wasn't over yet, so they were a minority already. The boys were poor, easy to take advantage of. The women saw that in the boys, and they went with it.
    3. The economic stance of all the people involved in this case was that they were poor. The case consisted of poor people trying to effect other poor people.
    4. I think that' I deserve a 4 out of 4 because I provided key details towards the evidence of their economic state.

  8. Victoria Price and Ruby Bates both grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, where there was no work to be found. Both girls only worked about 5-6 days in the month. They both went out to find jobs among other people in the poor town. Olen Montgomery was also on one of the trains the girls were on, on his way to Memphis to find a job. Olen needed a new pair of glasses because he had a cataract in one eye and could barely see. He was poor along with the other 8 boys who were accused but Olen had something special. He made it all the way through the fifth grade and he was the only one who could write out of all of the the other boys. Since all of the defendants and the accusers were poor, this would have shaped the events to be pretty equal. They understood why everyone was on the train at the time, looking for jobs. There were "a quarter million jobless young people lived itinerant lives, moving from place to place by hopping trains" so it's not like they were the only ones that were on the train, there could've been more. The accusers did not have to accuse just those boys.

I would give myself a three because I understood the text.

  9. 1. Briefly describe the two women who accused the Scottsboro defendants of rape, especially their socio-economic background.

Ruby: Accused 3 black men of raping her. She lived in a poor town, 17 years old. Prostitute.

Victoria: Worked as a spinner when she was 10. She accused the men of rape. Prostitute.

    2. Briefly describe these young men, especially their socio-economic background.

They were from a very poor environment, plus they knew that they could accuse them and get away with it. After all, history repeats itself, and blacks where well known to be at the low totem poll. This could be their lucky break to get some money, and who better to blame than the blacks?

    3. How might the socio-economic background of both the accusers and the defendants have helped shape the events of the case?

One that the men were black. Two, that the men were pour. The accusers were white, so they automatically had the lead.

    4. Evaluate your post using the following rubric and EXPLAIN your grade.

I understood it fine. I think I should get a 3. I didn't go into detail since my post was erased twice before this one.

  10. Olen Montgomery was the only defendant that could write at the time because he went all the way to fifth grade. In the article it says that Olen Montgomery had “a cataract in one eye, he could not see well at all” (People & Events Olen Montgomery). He was sentenced to six years in jail for a crime he didn't committ. The only reason these boys were accused was because they were an easy target. They were black and poor. If people weren't racist and didn't care about social status' this wouldn't have happened. They had so much evidence to back up that the boys were not guilty, but still convicted them guilty. This trial was so unfair and because of their socio-economic background they were put into this situation.

  11. 1. They were low class white women and prostitutes.

2.They were black men, who train-hopped with the women.

    3. The women were white, and the men that she accused were black. Therefore the judge and jury would most likely take a white women's word over a black mans word.

  12. The girls were pore young and white. There were from not such a segugated place. one worked at a mill and one was a prostitute tored black and white. She also was caught hugging a black man so she wasn't resist.

  13. The two women that accused the Scottboro boys of rape both had a very poor background. They made about $1.50 a day which was half of what they usually made. Also Victoria's the only one in the family that making money because he mom suffered a injury while spinning. Olen Montgomery had made it through fifth grade and was the only one who could read and write out of the nine boys. Olen can hardly see and was on the train to find some work to get eyeglasses when he was taken off the train and arrested. After the first trial Olen was sent to jail for six years. If the girls weren't so poor I don't think that they would have to be prostitutes on the train. The only reason why they were prostitutes is because they needed money to support their families. Same goes for the boys because they were only on the train for the money.
I would give myself a 4 because I clearly a clear understanding and included specific evidence

  14. 1. Briefly describe the two women who accused the Scottsboro defendants of rape, especially their socio-economic background.
The two accusers were young white woman who were very poor and worked for very little.
    2. Briefly describe these young men, especially their socio-economic background.
They were all young black men who had very little education. Olen Montgomery was born in Monroe, Georgia and made it to the fifth grade. He was one of the only educated teens of the defendants. He didn't know any of the other defendants but was sentenced to death.
    3. How might the socio-economic background of both the accusers and the defendants have helped shape the events of the case?
The economic status of these men helped shape the case because if these girls weren't poor then they wouldn't have been prostitutes and this wouldn't be a problem.
I think I deserve a 4 bc I answered the questions in detail and showed a well understanding of the reading.

  15. The two women Ruby Bates and Victoria Price were very poor individuals that lived 'in a poor neighborhood of Huntsville and worked in the mills.' Bates was the more quieter accuser and let Price do all the talking. They lived in a neighborhood where blacks and whites nearly lived together.

The black men accused were also very poor, but literate and actually wrote books while in jail. All that Montgomery wanted was money to pay for a new pair of glasses.

If the women were richer, they would have not been on the same train and maybe this whole thing would not have gone down.

  16. 1) Ruby Bates was seventeen and both her and Victoria Price were poor.
    2) They were black teens who were accused of raping the two girls. And even though the two girls were poor like them they were still above them because they were white.
    3) The boys did not stand a chance because the white are always above the blacks.
I think I should get a four because I answered all of the questions.

    1. The girls are poor they make 1.50 a day.
    2. They were all black and had barely any education. Olen was born in Monroe and only made it to fifth grade. He was one of the only educated men in the case.
    3. The economic status definitely helped the case a lot because of the women's situations. The girls were poor, very very poor, and if they weren't then they would not have been prostitutes to make money and stay alive.
I deserve a 4 because u answered the questions, stayed on task and I do understand the book well enough to do so...

  18. 1. They were low class white women who accused the Scottsboro boys for rape. There was no work to be found where they lived.
    2. They were all young african american boys who had little education. Olen Montgomery was well educated and literate and was always trying to imporve himself but also didn't have a lot of money
    3. Race and social class were a big thing back then, if people weren't so racist most of this wouldn't have happened. The trial was unfair because they found multiple evidence that the women weren't raped.
I would give myself a four because I answer all the questions in detail and showed I have a clear understanding of what the trail was all about.

  19. 1) The two girls were poor white girls, around the age of 17, who got paid very little, if at all, and turned to prostitution for extra cash.
    2) Olen Montgomery was the only boy of all of them that could write, however he had sight problems, he didnt know any of the other boys, yet he was still convicted.
    3) Because the boys were black and the women were white, its obvious that the odds were heavily stacked agenst the boys because obviously racism was a thing back then.
    4) I'll rate a 3 because theres always more information than what i can possibly offer in 1 response.

  20. The two women who claimed they were raped by the Scottsboro boys were both lower class. Ruby Babes had once been arrested for hugging a black man in public. The girls did not have much of an effect on the outcome of the case because they were lower class and not as important. If they had been rich, the black men would have quickly been guilty

Olen Mongomery was the only one of the Scottsboro boys who could read or write. In the end he was one of the men found not guilty and released first. While he was in jail he was able to send out letters. Being able to read and write gave him an advantage i believe because it made him seem smarter than the rest. He was still black though which made him low class.

I would grade mine a 3 becuase i answered the questions but i did not add alot of detail

  21. 1) The two women who accused the men of rape where Ruby and Victoria. Ruby was a very quite young girl about 17 and she let Victoria do all the talking. Ruby was more of hard to get along with she made 1.50 a day and that is half of what she used to make and she has been mired a total of three time during the long trial.

    2) These Black young men came form not so rich family. They where poorly educated and where train hoping tying to find work for them.

    3) I the nine men where white men the case could of been closed sooner that it did. They would of took all the even dents and saw that there was no evident of rape. But because they where black men they never really took a second look at the evident collected.

I give m self a three because I could of answered the question in a little it more details.

  22. Ruby Bates and Victoria Price were two young, relatively pretty women, who you would never expect to lie. Ruby Bates was once arrested for hugging a black man in public, which shows her attitude towards any Jim Crowe laws. She mostly stayed quiet for the entire trial, but then denied any rape or assault afterwards. Victoria Price was a bit more outspoken, and had been married five time sin her life. She also was a prostitute on the side, for extra money. It was said that many of her ‘clients’ were black men. During the trial, she used many colorful details to describe the said incident, it often changing.
Olen Montgomery was a young boy who was considered very literate in his time. He was the only one out of the nine boys, able to read and write. He was also very musical and enjoyed writing songs, and soon discovered he enjoyed ton play music as well.
The socio-economic background of both the accusers and defendants, had a large deal to do with the case. Regardless of any of their actual personalities, all anyone saw was their gender and race. Ruby and Victoria were known for being a bit scandalous, and Olen was known as a pretty smart man compared to others.
I think this is a four out of four because I showed I understood the text and that I could develop ideas.

  23. Ruby Bates and Victoria price were no high class women. They both were poor and lived in poor neighborhoods and didnt have much going for them. They were prostitutes and that's how they made their money. They probably caused all these problems because they were poor and needed money so they said the 9 boys raped them.

One of the boys accused Olen Montgomery had a better work ethic than these two women. He was at the bottom of the social class because he was black and this was during the Great Depression and only did things to make his life happy.

The 2 women Ruby Bates and Victoria Price, and Olen Montgomery were both poor and very low class. In this case it's like poor people having disputes with poor people to effect other poor and lower class people.

I would give myself a 3/4 because I understood the text but I think my responses could use more detail.

  24. The two women that accused the black men where poor prostitutes and came from very broken homes. Victora was the worst one, she is the one that lied the most and could not keep a husband because she was married 3 times. The black boys came from a very poor hardworking background. Because they are poor blacks that are traveling illegally on a train to another place they can hope to get jobs if a women saying they she was raped it was easy to convict them because of their background. Because the women had bad backgrounds as prostitutes it helped the case because it opened the eyes of people to see who the women really were.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The economical background of the men in the Scottsboro trials were not as good as the women in the trial however nobody really had a strong economical background because of the depression. One of the men was looking for work so he could purchase a pair of eye glasses. He was the only one of the group that could read and write. Also both women were looking for work by train hopping. I also think that because they were so poor their choice to choose to claim that the men had raped them was their only way out of their own problems. They also used their low economic class to get away with the trial and blame the men. However Ruby Bates eventually admitted to lying and not being raped. But Victoria Price kept though her story twelve times she told her story in a court of law. Therefore it shows that Ruby felt bad and also felt she made a poor choice.
    4 details from the case

  26. The two women Ruby bates and Victoria price were poor women who lived in the poor town of Huntsville and they both worked at the mill in Huntsville to make ends meet.

Olen Montgomery was the accused, he was a poor black man from Monroe, Georgia. but unlike most black men Olen was literate and even wrote books when he was in prison.

if the women weren't poor and weren't hookers than the case would have played out completely different that is how the social economic status of the women effected the case.

  27. Ruby Bates was a poor white teenager. She lived in Huntsville. From reading the article about her it seems like the trail of Scottsboro wasn't her first trial. Ruby was the quiet one, didn't seem like this was her idea. In the end she told the truth.

Her partner in crime, Victoria Price, was the loud one. She wanted to make sure those boys "got what they deserved". Price grew up in a poor part of Huntsville, Alabama also and worked in local cotton mills with Bates. They only worked a total of five or six days a month and got $1.20 a day. they had both been working since they were about ten, bringing in income for their family. When Victoria accused six out of the nine boys of raping her she was twenty one and had been married three times so you can see that her social life wasn't easy for her. She was good at coming up with what happened. She used as much detail as possible in court. And just like Bates, Price had a record.

Olen Montgomery was from Monroe Alabama. He went to school up to fifth grade and was the only one who could write at the time of the trial. He went two years without glasses because they broke the day of the arrest and didn't have enough money to buy them. He didn't know any of the other eight guys he was sentenced with.

If the guys were white and the girls where black the case would have been completely different. They were all the same class (low class) but the lawyers they had were different in how well they are.

I give myself a three because I could have went into more detail when it came to the trial.

    1. Briefly describe the two women who accused the Scottsboro defendants of rape, especially their socio-economic background.
The girl was named Victoria wasn't like the other girl Ruby she was in her own side that would prevent , she was a prostitutes that were working in a barns and other places in Alabama and Michingan . This two girls met on the train to go to work.Ruby was 17 yrs old , she lived in the poor area that led that girls to be raped because of the people or the kids would be just walking around because of the mature kids and the parents were working all of the time because if they didn't have the money to pay for their food, resources and the homes that they lived in they wouldn't be able keep anything to them self's.In the article talks about home it happens and why do the kids/ adult happen to them.In the article is says that ''Southerners believed racial segregation was present at all levels of society, that just wasn't true. In the poverty-stricken parts of Huntsville where Bates spent her time, blacks and whites played together, drank together, and even sometimes slept together''. Some of the level of the society wouldn't make a lot of sense and it was the only way that easier for the boys to get to the girls and they couldn't say anything because of the ways that they made the girls think about.
    2. Briefly describe these young men, especially their socio-economic background.
the teenager’s boy’s were arrested because of they raped the girsl on the train while there were faithing with the white guys on the train .One of the girls yelled the in the train screaming , and saying that the black kids raped the two girls on the train. The black kids were saying that nothing they need with the two girls involved them , they were fighting with the white guys on the trail. After the kids were send to the prison they were He made it through fifth grade and was the only defendant who could write at the time of the nine teenagers' arrest. Extremely myopic, and with a cataract in one eye, Montgomery could not see well at all. He was en route to Memphis, looking for work to buy some new eyeglasses, when he was taken from the train and arrested in 1931,
    3. How might the socio-economic background of both the accusers and the defendants have helped shape the events of the case?
the both of the case were in the same point of the view with the boys one was more clear of the case by After the first trial, Montgomery was jailed for six years without a retrial. Each of the nine kids were eaither send to jail or other places for them. The girls one was more considering about the guys and how they work at their jobs. The posse sought the black teenagers who had thrown a group of white boys off the train. When the two white women said they had been raped by the black youths, the town, the women and the group of black young men and boys became part of the tragic episode in American history known as Scottsboro.

The grade for the responces on the top i would say three for both of them , even though I do understand this topic was still not the most understood one and clear from my point of view. That’s why I picked three instead of four because of the incuded evidence and the some ideas I had for the responses for the articles.
