Chapter Review TKAM 1-8

Write a 100 word response for ONE of the following topics.  Use the chapter you have been assigned.
  1. Chapter Naming:  Harper Lee does not provide a title for each of her chapters.  What title would you provide for each chapter that you read?  List two important events (note page number and use quotes where applicable) that would be evidence to support your choices.
  2. Quotable quotes:  Identify a meaningful quote from each chapter read and explain in at least three sentences why you believe it to be significant within the novel.
  3. If Scout had school the next day what would she say about the events experienced in the chapter? – use dialogue to make this come alive
  4. One word:  Pick one word that captures the theme or main ideas of the novel across the assigned reading for that night.  Write one paragraph that incorporates textual proof and explains why selected this word.
  5. Connection:  Consider how the reading connects to a previous piece of literature read in school.  This may connect to literature read in previous years, your life, or the news.  You must include a perfectly blended quotation in your response.

Grade your response using the following rubric.
Each entry could be worth up to 5 points each:
Specific textual references
Well developed responses of at least 100 words each.
Complete sentences, capitalization, punctuation
Proper citation...
Properly blended and cited textual reference.

  1. The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper lee is take placed in the 1930’s. I once watched this movie as a kid, it was called Monster House. This movie related to the book all together. The kids in the book and in the movie are scared of what lies inside the houses. But the book and the movie specifically connect in chapter five about when the kids in the book tried to place a note inside the Radley house. In the Movie the kids were trying to sneak up onto the lawn to get something back but they were too scared because the house was known to eat everything.

    1. I think this is important because kids are always curious about the unknown. They always want to find out if the myths and stories are true. Sometimes the curiosity can get them in trouble or seriously hurt, but they're kids so they don't understand that.

  2. Chapter Naming: For chapter 2 in To Kill a Mockingbird, I would name the chapter Back to School. I would name it this because Scout and Jem go back to school in September. After Dill left to go back to Meridian Scout says "I never looked forward more to anything in my life" (Lee 20). Scout seems excited to go back to school in this chapter but in later chapters she starts to hate school more and more. Scout doesn't have a good relationship with her teacher Miss. Caroline. Scout said something and "Miss Caroline stood stock still, then grabbed me by the collar and hauled me back to her desk" (Lee 28). I think Scout doesn't like school because of her teacher and it turns out to be a bad experience.

  3. If I were to name chapter 5 I would call it " Explanations". I would call chapter 5 explanations because in this chapter Miss Maudie explains to Scout that Mr. Radley is still alive and tries to enlighten Scout on why he would stay in his house all day and that he isn't really as bad as he is portrayed to be because "that is a sad house. I remember Arthur Radley when he was a boy. He always spoke nicely to me, no matter what folks said he did. Spoke as nicely as he knew how" (Lee 61). This quote proves that Miss Maudie is just trying to explain to Scout that the the Radley's are really not bad as the rumors are made out to be about them and just gives Scout a good example of a "normal" situation with him.

    1. I think that Boo Radley is staying in his house all day to protect him from the rumors and that the reason why he stays in his house all day isn't necessarily from him but because of his family and how strict they are. and if he isn't crazy " he should be by now" (Lee 61) due to all the rumors.

  4. In chapter 3, Burris Elwell returns to school, for his annual appearance. A bug crawls out of his hair and causes Miss Caroline concern and to freak out. Before leaving the classroom the student causes Miss Caroline to cry from such rude remarks. This causes Scout to ask Atticus if there is anyway she can not attend school and have Atticus teach her, scout learns that it's the law to go to school but Atticus will continue to help her with school as long as she doesn't tell the teacher. Having said that, if I were to name this chapter I would call it "influences that come from school" I would call it this because there is more than one student in this chapter that just doesn't want to attend school, students influence each other constantly on a daily basis in negative and positive ways. - megan

  5. Child hood games is what I am referring chapter 4 to. I think of this because these kids make up so many rumors about Radley. They even created a game called, "boo Radley" to occupy there time. They also snoop around and they find things like in the old oak tree, "After school one day, she passes the Radley Place and sees some tinfoil sticking out of a knothole in one of the Radleys’ oak trees. Scout reaches into the knothole and discovers two pieces of chewing gum. She chews both pieces and tells Jem about it" (Lee 44). My opinion on this is Scout gets so bored in school that when she gets home the mystery Radley house occupies her time and these game and rumors that they make up give them the beilif that they are real. Sometimes when you lie and make up so many rumors you get caught up in it and believe what your saying, even if its not the whole truth. By: Christine Jasonis

  6. The Intro to Boo
I would name the chapter that because at the beginning of the book you are first introduced to Boo Radley. That is the most important part of the chapter. The children make up stories about how Boo lurks around the neighborhood at night even though none of the kids have ever seen him. Another horror story "boo was sitting in the living room cutting items to paste in a scrapbook and mr radley entered the room. He calmly inserted the scissors into his fathers leg removed them wiped them on his pants and resumed his activity"(Lee 11).

  7. I chose chapter naming, and I had chapter 4. I chose to name the chapter "Here Comes Trouble", and I choose to name it this because, in this chapter Dill comes to town and he starts to stir up some trouble like on page 36 "We had strolled to the front yard, where Dill stood looking down the street at thee dreary face of the Radley Place. " I-smell-death," he said. "I do, I mean it," he said, when I told him to shut up." (Lee 36). This shows how dill gets them interested in the Radley place making Jim think about it more and more edging him to creep on the house even more.

  8. The word I would chuse for chapter 7 of to kill a mocking bird would be unhappy. I would use this word because of two events that happen in the chapter, the first one was that Scout went back to school and she said it was just as bad as first grade. The secend thing that happened that would make me chuse the word unhappy for this chapter is that the hole was pached some would have isolation. Isolation is not a happy thing.

  9. 3. If Scout had school the next day she would probably say how Dill, Jem, and herself "were playin strip poker up yonder by the fishpool" (54). She would then go on to say how her brother Jem lost his pants in a bet right before Mr. Radley took a shot at a person in his back yard. Jem then had to go running out in the front yard in front of everyone in just his shorts. She then would go on into how he was so embarrassed about it and how he ran to get back inside.

  10. Intro to Boo Radley Chp.1

"Jem received most of his information from Miss stephanie crawford... According miss stephanie boo was sitting in the livingroom cutting some items from the maycomb tribune to paste in his scrapbook, his father entered the room, as mr radley passed by boo drove the scissors into his parents leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities"(Lee 11). This quote is significant because its the main rumor that has been spread about Boo Radley which is the cause of everyones fear of Boo. In reality Boo is actually a nice man who can be nice/caring to others however everyone thinks he is crazy or dead or worse. Ultimately this quote is important because it acts as a guideline of sorts for Scout, Jem, and Dill for whenever they interact with Boo and the Radley place.

  12. For chapter one I would give the name The Beginning . I would give it this name because this is where we meet the main characters Scout, Jem her brother and her father Atticus. We also learn Scout mother died although she doesn't remember much about her. we also learn about the Haunted Boo Radley house. This chapter is telling us only the outline of the rest of the story to come.

  13. For Chapter 1, I would name the chapter, "The Finches and Maycomb." This chapter introduces the main characters, the "tired, old town (Lee 5)" of Maycomb, Alabama and the Radley house. Scout, the narrator, gives an account of her family's history, her brother, the townsfolk and their new friend Dill. Although Maycomb is suffering from the Great Depression, Scout's father, Atticus Finch, is a kind lawyer who makes a solid income despite living in a town such as this.
There was one thing which intrigued the children the most to keep the town of Maycomb exciting to them, and that was the Radley Place. Legend has it that a boy named Arthur "Boo" Radley had broken the law and was subjected to permanent house arrest by his father. When his father died, his brother came to take care of him, yet no one has seen him out of the house for over a decade. Investigating the mysterious house to see if anyone was alive in there was one of the things which Scout, Jem and Dill anticipated when they had the guts to do it.
As you can see, "The Finches and Maycomb" is a fitting title for this chapter as it introduces the town and main characters.
