  1. 1) Observe: A lot the kids in the classroom that you are able to see, don't have shoes and their feet are very dirty.
    2) Reflect: This image was probably made during the depression because a lot of the kids don't have fitted clothing and/or shoes and it also doesn't have any black people. Also it is showing the difference of school then to now.
    3) Question: The teacher is watching closely at the boy's table, but why is she watching those two boys so closely? Do they have more trouble with reading or are they just trouble makers?
    4) Grade: I give myself a 3 because I answered the questions to my full knowledge and I did one to two of the questions for each.

    1. I feel like the teacher being at the boys table was just a coincidence and didn't really have any meaning, that is just when he decided to take the picture.

    2. E - Comment - I think Bailey had a very good reflection response, very good reasoning. I like how you said it shows the difference between schooling then and schooling now.

  2. 1. I first noticed that there are no African American students. Also that they don't have shoes on. There's a random stick that the kid might use as a walking stick. It's an older classroom and the kids seem poor and dirty.

    2. I think that this image was made to show how education was during the depression. Everyone was poor and couldn't even afford nice clothes, a shower, or shoes. I think the teacher is teaching these children how to read. I think it was made in the Great Depression because of the circumstances. You learn that times were a lot tougher than you think, the average school children are suffering, Their shoes are missing and also African American children. If someone made this today the technology would be a lot more advanced and the children would be better taken care of. The teacher would probably be working with the whole class not just the boy's table.

    3. If I could ask the photographer any question I would ask what made him take a picture of the classroom to represent the tough times of the Great Depression, why not the houses and living conditions?

    4. I give myself a 3.5 because I asked deep questions and reflected on the time period that went a long with the picture. Also, I made insightful inferences from the image and participated in the class discussion. And I'm not giving myself full points because then Mrs. Pixley gets mad.

    2. I really like your take on why the photographer took a picture of the classroom because I think people focus more on the houses and living conditions and I think it's interesting how in this picture the focus is education.

  3. A. There are no African American children. They are reading. They aren't wearing shoes. There's a stick. One table is all boys, the other is all girls. It's an older classroom. Their feet are dirty. The teachter is paying the most attention to the table with all the boys.
    B. This image when made to show the differences and similarities of education back then in 1930 during the Depression. If this image was today their would be a lot of differences. Like every kid would have shoes. But they could still be sitting just girls and boys in different tables. You can learn what this time period was like back then.
    C. Why is the teacher only paying attention to the boys? Why are their African Americans missing?
    D. 3 & a half because the writting isn't the best and it's vague in part A. I partciapted well. Also I listened to everyone.
    E. I think David's response about why he thinks the school was in the South is good but I could add to it by saying that after the Civil War the North is obviously more accepting of African Americans. So having a classroom with no black people shows a huge sign that this school is located in the South.

  4. 1) The kids have no shoes on, older classroom, stick near the kid, old school house, one table is all boys, and no black kids. I noticed the stick first.
    2) I think that the image was made to show how education is different from in the 1930's. I think that this is during the depression. This is missing black kids.
    3) Why take a picture of the classroom? Why did he pick this picture to focus on those kids and teacher? What are they reading about? What is the stick for?
    4) 3.5. I participated in class and have all the information done but it isn't very organized.

  6. This image is of a segregated school house where the teacher is teaching the class reading, however she is paying more attention to the boys because men were considered superior to women and therefore their education was more important. The time period is during the Depression because of the poor fitting of the clothes, lack of shoes, and the style of the dress that the teacher is wearing. The way the children have their hands on their books (in a way that it looks like they're moving across the page) makes it look as though they're reading braille and the cane could be a walking cane for a blind person. I figure this to be in the south because typically, the south would be more poorly dressed than children in the north and the classroom would be more racially diverse. From this image, you can learn more about how racism is still in effect besides the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War. I wonder about where exactly this photo was taken, what exactly they were studying, and who took this photo.

  7. A) There are no African American children and they kids aren't wearing shoes. Also, the children are learning something and reading. The children are separated by gender in an older classroom. The children's pants look way too small and their feet look dirty. The first thing that I noticed was that they kids didn't have shoes because their feet stuck out to me.

    B) I think this image was made to show education during the Great Depression. Also, it could show how times were during this time period because the kids aren't wearing shoes and their pants are too small so this could show that they can't afford certain things like shoes and clothes that fit. If someone made this image today there would be more diversity and the boys and girls would not be separated like they are. Also, the people would be wearing clothes that fit and the teacher wouldn't just be focusing on the boys.

    C) Why take a picture of a classroom not something else in the world that's bigger? Where are they?

    D) I give myself a 3.5 because I participated in class a little. Also, my answers do have some detail in them but aren't covered in detail to make it a 4, but I sitll answer all the questions with some detail.

  8. A - Observe - The kids there are not wearing any shoes and their feet look very dirty. The boys and girls are separated by tables. The scene is a very old classroom.
B - Reflect - This image was made to show that the kids were getting a good education. The few things missing from this image is better clothing and more interaction with the kids coming from the teacher. I think this was in the time period of the great depression.
C - Question - Where is this classroom located? Was there any people in this photo that was important to the time period or was it just a classroom full of kids?
D - Grade - I think I would give myself a 3 because we were not fully involved in the conversation. All of my responses were not completely in depth.

  9. -Describe what you see.
I see a classroom with students.

    -What do you notice first?
I notice the fact that they have no shoes, how the boys and girls are separated, and how old the classroom is.

-Why do you think this image was made?
This image was made to show you what life and education was like during the 1930's/Great Depression.

    -What’s missing from this image?
Black children. This appears to be an all-white school. Their shoes are also missing, indicating poverty.

Why did the photographer take a photo of the school? Why is it important? What does it mean?

I would rate myself a three because I didn't fully make extensive inferences. However, my questions were well thought through.

    1. You are very observant good job Marissa! You noticed that it was a classroom with students. However, you could extend it by saying, I noticed it was a classroom with white students that look like they are suffering with financial problems because of their clothing. Yes black students are missing from the image, what do you think about the minuscule amount of black people in the entire Litchfield County. We don't have any black classmates in this class we are in, how does this affect your response?

    2. I think that asking why it's focused on the boys is a good question to ask. But, maybe it was just when the photographer happened to take it. Maybe it was trying to show the inequality between genders as well as colored people.

  14. Observe: I see education for what it seems like first graders. I first notice that the teacher is leaning carefully over the children and well as the walking stick(?) that the boy in the front had. I also noticed that they all had bare feet.

Reflect:I think this image was made to either show black Americans what white school actually looked like. Or, it could've been taken to show parents how children are learning in the schoolhouse.

Question: Why are there no black people in the shot?
Why are the boys and girls separated?

    B. There aren't any black children in this image. The kids are trying to learn and the teacher is helping. I think this image was meant for people to see the dirty and different school conditions.
    C. I wonder why they separated the boys from the girls at the tables, because when we were younger we had to sit with both girls and boys at our tables. I also wonder if this was a typical school in that type, or if it was lower class than the average.

I think this image was made to show how the men were more payed attention to then women were during the depression because the teacher pays a lot more attention to the boys than girls.

    3) Question- where are these kids shoes? Can they not afford them? I also notice that the teacher lady is standing over 2 particular boys, are they the most trouble makers or is that just how the picture was taken? I also notice a kid with a stick, what's that in relation to him?

I think that this picture was taken to capture education during this time period. It shows the difference between the socioeconomic status of the children who went to school. Some of the kids are able to have shoes and the others can't afford to wear them. If this image was taken now, the children would have shoes because of welfare programs. If you look around school now, everyone has at least one pair of shoes to wear.

I wonder why that kid has a walking stick. This is a candid shot to show what education was really like during the 1930s.

    Describe what you see.
What do you notice first? The some kids have no shoes and there are no black kids.
What people and objects are shown? There are a few kids at school and a teacher who is helping them read.
What is the physical setting? The physical setting is the school house.
What, if any, words do you see? I don't see any words other then what is in the books.
What other details can you see? The boys are at one table and the girls at another. Also some of the kids are wearing hami down rag clothes.

    B. R E F L E C T

Why do you think this image was made? To show how the depression hit the education part of life. some kids are dressed nice and other have no shoes and are wearing rags pretty much.
What’s happening in the image? The kids are learning how to read.
When do you think it was made? In the height of the depression in the 1930's.
Who do you think was the audience for
this image? The people who are want to learn what it was really like in the depression times.
What can you learn from examining this image? Many kids from many different economic classes went to school if they could.
What’s missing from this image? Black kids and the young boys shoes.
If someone made this today, what would be different? What would be the same? it would be somewhat the same some kids are not dressed in fancy clothes and kids still go to school.

  22. Some of the first things I noticed are no shoes on some of the students I also noticed that there was a stick behind the students. There is no race mixed into the class hinting there is segregation. This image could have been taken to represent school life in the 1930s. The photo displays also what life was in the 1930s because it seems as though some families were better off than others. For example the teacher actually seems to be doing well because she is wearing nice clothes whereas some of the students look dirty because their clothes are not washed. It also represents the class system of the children. I also wonder about the teacher and what kind of lessons she could be teaching. Why do some students look dirty and some don't. What is the stick behind the student. Could the stick be a fishing pole? What might the teacher be helping the kids with.

  23. A.) observe. One of the first things I saw was that they were in a classroom. They are reading, the boys at one table the girls at another. One of the little boys and one of the girls is not wearing shoes and the little boy also has a stick for some reason. There are also no black children in this classroom.
B.) reflect. I think this image was made to show what the classroom was really like. It shows how poor the kids and families are but it shows that they are still getting an education. It was made in the 1930s. If this picture were taken today things that would be different would be that everyone has shoes and looks well put together unlike the kids in the picture. Also the boys and girls are mixed in together not separated, and there is a mix of all races in schools.
C.) question. One question I have is why is this picture just focused on the kids reading?why don't they show what they are learning or how well they participate and learn? Was this picture just posed? Why is it focus on just the boys?
D.) grade. I give myself a three because I completed the task and answered the questions but I could have answered more or went into more depth on the answers.

  24. A) What I notice is that the boys are at one table and the boys are at a other table. There are no African Americans either. It looks like a small class. They are doing some sort of reading. I notice that most of the children don't have shoes.

    B) I think this picture was taken to capture how school or the eduction was during this time period. It also captures the type of kids that went to school during this time period. All white and no shoes verses shoes. If someone was to capture this picture today it would be very different. Boys and girls would be sitting together or in rows of desks. We would all have shoes on whether they're brand name or not. African Americans and whites go to school together. There would still be one teacher helping the whole class.

    C) My question is what is that stick the little boy has? Is it his walking stick or fishing pole? Also, were classes the same all over or were they different depending on where you live?

    D) I give myself a 3 because I could probably expand more on question one but I did expand a lot on question two and my answers are complete and meet the requirements of the assignment.

  25. Describe what you see.
I see a bunch of students reading. The boys and the girls are at separate tables
    What do you notice first?
The first thing that i noticed was that the boy doesn't have any shoes on

    What’s missing from this image?
There are no black people in this image. There are two tables full of white boys and girls but no where is there a black child
If someone made this today, what would be different? What would be the same?
If this image was taken today, there would be a bigger mixture of different races. All of the students would be sitting together instead of being separated. A similarity would be that there would still be different classes of people. There will always be at least one kid who doesn't have nice clothes (the boy with no shoes)
where? Where was this picture taken?
why? What is the stick behind the boy? What is it for?

I give myself a 3. I believe that i deserve a three because i gave good answers to the questions and asked good questions.

    1. I would say that the stick was probably a walking stick or perhaps an old fashioned fishing pole. Also why do you think the boys and girls have been separated into different groups and tables.

    1. I see a school for white children possibly in the 40's-50's. It shows a classroom of kids reading with their teachers. Most kids do not have shoes on and one has a stick either for walking or fishing.
    2. The teacher looking at the boys book.
    3. There is a teacher and a classroom with children in it. They all have books, one has a stick and the boys and girls are split up.
    4. A classroom.
    5. I do not see any words in the picture.
    6. Some or all of the children have no shoes; all the boys are girls are split up. One boy has a pole possibly for fishing or walking.

    1. To show classrooms during this time. I do not think this shows the racial separation during this time because I don't think parents would want someone who believes in equality in their children's classroom.
    2. The children are reading and the teacher is walking around checking on them.
    3. Around the 1940's-1950's.
    4. The photographer and the others in this picture.
    5. The children and teachers are not wealthy. They look like the average middle class during this time period.
    6. Black children.
    7. There would be more than one race in the classroom. We would have a lot more technology, decoration and books in the classroom. No sticks would be in the classroom. All the kids would be on their cellphones.

    What do you wonder about...

    1. Who is taking the picture?
    2. What was the point of the stick? What are they reading
    3. When was this taken?
    4. Where was this taken?
    5. Why are they not all facing the board?
    6. How did the photographer get the teacher to let him/her photograph the class?

I give myself a 3 out of 4 because I answered the question but I could have done better.

  27. A) I see that the boys and girls are separated and that the children look pretty dirty. What i notice first is that all the children seem really focused on their school work and none of them are just looking around. They are all concentrated on their books.
    B) What is happening in this image is a normal school day back in this time period. All the children are being taught and the teacher is going around checking on their their progress or answering questions they may have. What I can learn from this image is that all the kids don't have that many teaching utensils. The only thing they have to learn with it looks like is the books in front of them but I don't see any pencils or pens or paper.
    C) I wonder why the children don't have any shoes and why there isn't any diversity in the class room race wise.
    D) I give myself a 4 on my responses because I clearly address each question with detail.

What do you notice first? A room full of all white children. Some are missing shoes.

What other details can you see?Boys and girls are separate

Why do you think this image was made? I think this image was made to show a classroom from the 30's and how little material they had.
What’s happening in the image? The kids are reading while the teacher is possibly helping a student.

    why? Are the kids segregated.

  29. What I see in this picture is kids learning in a very different environment than I do today. The boys and girls are separated. It looks like the teacher is using what she has to teach these students. The first thing I notice is that several kids don't have shoes on probably because they can't afford them. What I can learn from this image is the difference between my school and that school. That school is very small and has very little students. Also there's not a lot of text books or any material needed to teach. What's happening in this imagine is kids are being taught and they are trying to learn the best they can regardless of the circumstances. Some things I wonder are who are these people and when was it taken place.
On this assignment I would give myself a 3 because I could have elaborated more.

  30. A2. I notice that it's a small classroom and the boys and girls are separated. Some of the kids are not wearing any shoes and they are dirty. There hair is all messed up and they have dirt on their feet.
A6. Other details I see are the stick that is leaning against the boys chair. Also it doesn't look like there are many materials in the classroom. All I see is books and no pencils or papers.
B1. I think this image was made to see how the school looked like in the 1930's. You can compare it to how classrooms look now and you notice many differences.
B7. Something missing from this picture is school work all I see is books. They look like their learning how to read but are they learning how to write. It seems that there are no paper or pencils.
C6. How did these kids get to school?

    1. Hunter I noticed the same types of things as you like how the children were not wearing any shoes and how they looking a little dirty. I think that the children's parents probably brought them to school or they walked to school themselves. I don't really understand why they look so dirty though what do you think? Maybe they were playing outside?

  31. A. Observe: I see a school room during the depression and what the schools were like during the depression. The first thing I noticed is that the children have no shoes and look dirty and messy and that boys and girls are separated.

    B. Reflect: I think this picture was made to show what school was like in the depression. I think this picture was made somewhere around the depression because it is black and white and because of the way the kids are dressed and the way the school room is.

    C. Question: Where are the kids shoes? Why are the boys and girls separated?

  32. A: This looks like an old poor school down south. The kids look very dirty and some aren't even wearing shoes. The first thing that I saw was that they were in school.
B: I think the kids are in English class right now because they have books out and in school you don't really read books unless you are in English class. Black children are missing from this picture. Very few blacks had education back then.

    1. I have to agree with you on the questioning of the stick leaning next to the boy. I think it is peculiar that this stick has a hidden meaning. Though, along with this stick I think the small house in the background doesn't make sense just because it is so random. Overall I would probably rate you the same score because you put in the time to answer the questions but could have added more detail.

  34. In this image one of the first things I see is a small group of kids, sitting at two tables, and reading books so I assume that they are in school. The tables are divided by gender because one has only boys and the other has only girls. I see a teacher leaning over to help one of the boys and I noticed that a few of the boys didn't have any shoes on so this shoes some poverty. I also noticed how there are no black kids at this school. The physical setting of this picture is at a school, in a classroom and I can tell this by how the teacher is standing there overlooking the students and they are doing work by reading their books. Also in the background of the picture you can see that the walls are covered by chalkboards.

I think this image was made to show what schooling looked like in the 1930s and what an everyday school day would consist of. I think this because it doesn't look like they are doing anything out of the ordinary, they're just reading their books and it seems like it's an everyday assignment for them. What's missing from this photo is black kids and this tells you that the white kids were the only ones receiving education. Also you don't see any student work around the room, the walls are very plain with chalkboards so it doesn't seem like they received the same type of education that we do today.

Why was this picture taken? Did they have a reason to take this picture or did it just represent a regular school day in this period? Was this the average size of a classroom back then?

I give myself a 4 because I answered all the questions in full detail.

  35. The first I notes was that it was a classroom and it was very basic. there was not any student work on the wall or anything. The people in the picher are many kindergartens with their teacher. They are in a very basic classroom teaching posters like in our classrooms. I remember in my kindergarten classroom there were posters with the alphabet on them all over the walls. in this classroom there are only bare wall. Something that would be missing from this picture would be some of the students shoes. At Least two of the students are bare foot. They are also missing pencils and paper. They only have books in front of them. I also wonder about why the girls and the boys are separated, and why there are not any black kids there.
I give myself a 3 because I did not go into as much detail as a 4 requires.

Describe what you see. I see a room full of small kids learning in a very dull environment with only 1 teacher.
What do you notice first? The first thing I noticed was that all of the kids are white and they have lacking attire. For example, they have no foot wear and their hair is disheveled.
What people and objects are shown? There is a small house on the chalkboard in the back and a random stick laying next to one of the boys. Also, each kid has his own textbook. There are 13 people, 1 teacher, 6 boys, and 6 girls
What is the physical setting? The setting looks kind of gloomy and dull without much entertainment. It seems that some people wanted to leave.

    B. R E F L E C T

Why do you think this image was made? I think this image was made to portray the environment of school houses in this time period. It could even be a picture showing how it is not fair for only white kids to be schooled since there is no black people in the picture.
What’s happening in the image? The teacher is running a class of small kids and directing them in their learning experience.
When do you think it was made? I think this image was made in the 1930's when slavery has ended and there was still a gap between black and white people. For example in this picture there are no black people because of the gap.

    What do you wonder about...

who? I wonder about the kids and their lifestyle because they have no foot wear. Also, who is actually taking this picture.
what? My biggest wonders in this picture starts with the stick next to the boy. Why is it there? Also, why is the a small house in the background?

  37. A. I notice first that all the of the kids are white and there are only a few things on the table for learning supplies. The physical setting is in a 1930's wooden classroom where young kids are reading.
    B. I think this image was made to show how simple and poor life was in the south in the 1930's. I think this image was made in the early 1930's because it is an old black and white image with old 30's style chairs and classroom. It also shows the kids in dirty clothes with no shoes which indicates the 30's when many people couldnt afford new things.
    C. Where exactly in the south this picture was taken that it is so clean inside the school house? Why does the boy closest to the camera have a stick with him?
    D. I give myself a 3.5 because i answered everything to my best knowledge but there is always room to improve.

  38. A. 1. In this images it looks to be about the 50s and because the picture is in black an white it shows me it has to be older. I see that this must be a poor white school because of the shoesless children and there are no black children in the picture.
    2. I noticed first that the image is in black and white, also the shoeless kids.
    B. 1. I can learn from this image that I shouldn't take technology and my teachers for granted because children back then didn't have a lot or much of anything. Also teachers we much more harsh on kids and physical.
    2. This image was made to show the public how school was for kids, it was plan and boring very minumim education. This shows how poor the school was because there was barley any school supplies or anything for the kids to work or learn with.
    C. 1. Why are these kids shoeless?
    2. Why is there no school supplies?
    D. 1. I give my self a 3 because I show meaning and demonstrate depth in my answers because I understand the questions I have been asked. I am answering in complete answers and develop an understanding.

This image was made to show the impact that the Depression had on school children.
The school children are reading a book, silently.
    During the Great Depression.
Parents of school children, as a newspaper report regarding quality of school during the Depression, or for the Department of Education to view on how to improve schooling.
Girl and boys were separate from each other in public schools, no black children attended, and some of these children didn't own shoes.
Enthusiasm and smiling faces and shoes for the shoe-less.
It would be a colored photo, and in our education system, it would be controversial because all other schools in our country are not segregated by race or sex.

    C. Q U E S T I O N

    What do you wonder about...

who? The children without the shoes, are they too poor to own any? Are they from the same family?
what? Did all schoolhouses looked like this during the 1930s?
when? When did schools get reformed, if any improvement at all?
where? Where is this schoolhouse? In Kansas?
why? Why is there no enthusiasm in this classroom?
how? How were the lives of children impacted during the Great Depression.

    Describe what you see. :
I see an extremely small looking classroom with very view student. I see children with no shoes and I think they may be living in a poor section of wherever They live because they also don't have many things to learn from by the looks of the tables being so empty of any writing material, papers, and more books. By the looks of it they only have a single book

What other details can you see? Other detail that I had noticed were that the boys are separated from the girl. Also the boy seem to be getting more attention from the teacher then the girls. I have also noticed that the teacher looks to be much older like almost in her 60 or 70’s.

    B. R E F L E C T

Why do you think this image was made?
I believe that this image was made to show how schooling was like during the depression. What they didn’t and did have for school in this general time.

    What’s missing from this image?
What missing from this image is shoes for the children with bare feet. “A reason why these children are missing their shoes is because they maybe be poor since the image looks like it was taken furring The Great Depression. Another thing that I noticed that is missing is that they’re only books and nothing else. There should at least a pencil or some papers but there are only books.

    C. Q U E S T I O N

    What do you wonder about...
What I’m wondering about is who are these student do they come from a big family or a small family?

I’m also curious on where this photo was taken if it was in a big city or a small countryside school. I think it is more like they from a small country school because I’d imagine coming to school with no shoes in the big city wouldn't be accepted to warmly.
