  1. Chapter 7: Chapter Naming: I would call this chapter The Dying Tree because throughout the chapter Scout and Jem find various trinkets in the trees hole such as more gum and ‘almost perfect miniatures of two children.’ (Lee 80) that look eerily just like them. It seems that someone has a hiding place or they are leaving presents for the children. However suddenly the hole was filled up with cement, put there by Mr. Radley. When Jem asked him why, Radley said the the “tree was dying. You plug ‘em with cement when they’re sick. You ought to know that Jem.” (Lee 83) even though the tree looked perfectly healthy.

    1. I also called this chapter The Dying Tree. I think that this response would be better if you put your opinion on why Mr. Radley put cement in the tree. Also, I like how you said what the other things in the tree were that they found. That is why this was a good response.

  2. The title of this chapter should be “Demonstrations.” A lot of the drama in this book was because of Aibileen trying to teach May-Mobley to use the toilet but her mother will not demonstrate, making May-Mobley not fully understand the concept. Aibileen is not allowed the use the indoor bathroom because of the new “home health sanitation” movement so she demonstrates in her colored bathroom outside. May-Mobley now understands the concept, but thinks she has to use the colored bathroom which her mother strongly corrects her saying “you are going to catch a disease” and “I did not raise you to use a colored bathroom!"(Stockett 111)

  3. Chapter 7 Chapter Naming:
I would name this title “ Knothole” because throughout the whole chapter the kids keep finding things in the knothole such as soap with figures carved in it, they also found chewing gum, a spelling bee medal, and an old pocket watch. But they noticed something about the soap with the figures carved in them “ Jem looked from the girl-doll to me. The girl-doll wore bangs. So did I. “these are us” he said.”(Lee 60) This frightened Jem a little bit. They didn’t know who would or could do this. So with all the things and the importance of the things in the knothole, I believe Knothole is a good title for chapter 7.

    1. I think that one of the main ideas of the chapter was the events of the knothole. I think that Boo Radley was not as bad as others think he is. Its important to note that he is probably not as bad and he is not a monster after all.

    2. I'd give myself a 4 out of 5 because I have information from the text and used the characters names correctly but the only thing i'm not sure about is if i cited the quote right.

  4. I think an important quote in chapter 6 is "Dill and Jem were simply going to peep in the window with the loose shutter to see if they could get a look at Boo Radley."(Lee 69) This is an important quote because it shows how curious they still are about Boo and this may be a bad thing for the future. You can also see how the kids don't think they are doing anything wrong even though they are. That is why I think that this is an important quote for chapter 6.
I think that the most important part was when there was a fire at Miss Mandie's house. When this happened the kids went outside and Boo Radley puts a blanket on Scout and she didn't know. This is the most important because why would Boo do this and why was it to Scout. That is what the most important part of the book was.

  5. In chapter six:
Dill, Jem, and Scout attempt to search around the house, however after around 5-10 minutes of searching they discover the shadow of a man with a hat on, so they flee the scene, they hear a shotgun go off behind them.
They escape under the fence at the schoolyard, James pants got stuck on the fence, but with a few kicks he was free to go(without his pants though).
They return home to find Atticus, Miss Maudie, and Stephanie Crawford; “the neighborhood gossip”. She tells them that Mr. Radley shot a black guy in his yard.
When they ask where James pants are, Dill says he won them in a pair of strip poker.
To Protect their aliby Dill said they were playing with matches.
Late that night, Jem returned to go ty & find his pants.

  7. Scout goes back to school in chapter 7, she realizes she hates second grade even more than first grade. However Jem tries to tell his sister that the school system will become better. Scout states "The second grade was grim, but Jem assured me that the older I got the better school would be, that he started off the same way and it was not until 6th grade when things became better]"(59) Usually Jem probably feels more freedom in school being an upper classman. I also feel that Scout experiences a lot of freedom over the summer and she feels limited when she returns to school.

  8. My best entry I think for chapter 8 would be chapter naming. I say this because as I read throughout the chapter I would name it "Struggling Winter." I say this because throughout this chapter it talks about the struggles that people and parents are having. On page 85 when Atticus says "it's been the coldest winter since 1885" and Mr. Avery said that "kids started disobeying their parents by smoking and making war on each other." Calpurnia also "kept the fire blazing" because of how cold it was. (91) On page 93 Jem says "scout look! Smoke was rolling off our house and Miss Rachel's house and men were pulling hoses towards them. Behind us the fire truck from Abbotsville screamed around the corner and stopped in front of our house. This quote shows that the winter months are causing houses to burn down because of how much wood their burning to try and keep warm. If I were to grade myself on this I would probably give myself a 4 because I feel I had everything but I could be missing something.

  9. To kill a mocking bird journals

Chapter seven was about a knothole in the tree. The kids a finding gifts in the tree such as gum, and twine. It is assumed that Boo Radley is putting the gifts in the tree for the kids. One day the kids go back to the tree to find that Nathan Radley cemented the knothole in the tree. I would title this chapter "The Cement Fence" I would call it that because the purpose of Nathan cementing the tree was to protect boo and keep the kids away from him. Boo is different so he gets judged by everyone in the town. The town doesn't have a verifiable reason other than at Boo is different to judge or make up stories about him. Nathan cemented the tree because he didn't want the kids to make things worse for Boo. That is why I would title this chapter "the cement fence".

I would give myself a 5 because I used the characters names, used a vocabulary word and it was long enough, and I made a well developed response with correct use of grammar.

    1. This is a good paragraph, I like how you talked about when they covered the hole, and talked about Boo and the importance of him. I would give you a 5.

  10. In chapters 6-8 there are many important events that happen. In chapter 6 Jem gets caught in the Radley's yard and gets his pants caught on the fence. When he comes back to get them, they are sewn and folded on the fence. In chapter 7 the kids start finding things left in the tree in front of the Radleys house which Jem and Scout was left for them. In chapter 8 its snows for the first time in along time in Maycomb but Miss Maudies house burns down. The important thing that happens during this time is that Boo Radley puts a blanket around Scout. " somebody knew you were coming back for em" (58) In this chapter strange things keep happening to Jem and Scout. The first thing that happens is Jems pants which had been caught on a fence in the Radleys yard had magically been sewn and folded and hung for Jem's return. Once school started, items began to appear in the tree. At first Jem and Scout didnt know if the items were left for them but they took them anyhow. It wasnt until the soap carvings that the kids knew that the items were left for them. To the kids surprise, the tree was cemented shut. I believe that Mr. Radley filled in the hole in order to protect his son from the rumors and bullying that he would endure. I give myself a 4. I give myself this grade because i believe that i could have added more detail

  11. In chapters 6-8 Jem, Scout, and Dill went to the Radley house, and look through one of the shutters. They see a shadow and run from the yard, and Jem's pants get stuck on the fence. He then goes back and finds his pants folded on the fence. Jem and Scout then start finding little gifts and treats in the tree, such as gum, or soap carvings. Then Nathan Radley fills the tree in with cement to stop anything else from being out in there. For the first time in years, it snows in Maycomb, and then the children build a snowman out of dirt and cover it in snow. Miss Maudie's house then burns down in the middle of the night, and while Scout is outside with Jem, someone puts a blanket on her shoulders, and it is assumed that it was Boo.

"If I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon." (57) Scout is implying how if she wasn't with Dill or Jem, whoever was in that shadow, would've possibly shot and killed her. Also, it's showing how she's still scared of everyone in that house, and doesn't believe anything that Miss Maudie had said about Boo really being a good person. They did hear gunshots, and Mr.Radley just said that it was because he was shooting at an African-American, but really the kids know it was at them. So Scout knows she wouldn't have been able to get out alone.
I give myself a 4.5 out of 5 because I had enough words, proper citation, use of character names, and correct information.

  12. connection: the connection i made in chapter seven was when the tree was filled with cement i can connect that to when i was a little kid there was a hole in my screen in my window. so i used to climb out of the window and sit on the roof. and just like boo radleys brother my parents filled the whole in to protect me from falling off like how boo radleys brother bulged the tree up to protect him from hurting the kids. and of course just like the kids i was disappointed that the hole was fixed but it was fun while it lasted.

  13. Some important events of chapter's 6-8 are one in chapter 6 the boys are Scout are sneek over to Boo Radly's house and peek into the shutters. But they get cought and chased off with a shot gun. In chapter 7 Jem finds his pants mended and folded on the fence and they also found another treasure in the tree. Then they see that nathan Radley filled the whole cement.

  14. Just to sum-up chapter 6-8 scout and her brother keep finding new objects in there tree and each time they claimed the gifts that are in side. This was pretty cool because the gifts keep getting cooler and cooler. Until one day they found there tree cemented shut. Then it did something in the book that never happens where they live, It started to snow there. This freaked scout out a bit but the kids enjoyed what little snow they had. But because of the cold drop in tempter people left the fires unattended at night to keep the house warm. House fires started to happen due to the hot fires which keep the block up late trying to help save others furniture.

Chapter 8…. "Cold day, Hot night" would be that I would of called this chapter in the book. Because the during the day it started to snow in Alabama. It doesn't snow down there so for it to snow it has to of been a very cold day. The hot night is for the fire that happen at there Nabors house. It made the entire neighborhood warn practically melting what little snow there was on the ground. Many people who were helping were in their pajamas and robes watching from the street or trying to help save furniture from the burning house.

  15. In chapters six through eight many events happened. The kids went back to school. Each day in the way home they found things in the hole in the tree. They found Twine and soap that was carved to look like them. Eventually Nathan put cement in the hole so they couldn't keep getting things out of it. Also, Dill and Jem went to go scare boo and Nathan comes out and shoots at a black man in his back yard. Another important thing that happens is that Miss Maudie's house burns down. That happens in chapter eight and that's what I wrote about. One word I would pick for chapter eight is scary. I would pick the word scary because in this chapter a lot of things happened that Scout and Jem thought were scary. First, it was the coldest winter they've had in a while which the kids liked but it could be scary for the adults. Also, Miss Maudie's house burns down to the ground. While all of the neighbors and kids were outside because of the house fire, someone put a blanket around Scout. She was too tiered and focused on the fire to notice who it was. Later on, Jem informed everyone that it was Boo Radley who put the blanket around her. When Scout finds out this her "stomach turned into water and [she] nearly threw up when Jem help up the blanket and crept towards [her]" (page 72) The word scary would best be used because Scout and Jem are freaked out about the fire and Boo Radley. I would give myself a four point five on this response because I did everything is as suppose to. I think my blending was well done. The only reason I didn't give myself a five was because I probably could have elaborated and used more details.

  16. One word- The one word I would use for chapter 8 is unexpected. One of the first unexpected things that happened in this chapter was that it started to snow. In Alabama it never snows there so that was odd for something to happen. The next unexpected thing that happened was that Miss Maudie's house caught on fire. And the day after the fire she was laughing it off and saying she wanted the house gone anyways. Also one unexpected thing that happened was during the fire Jem and Scout were standing by the Radley house and during all of the commotion Scout never even realized that someone had placed a blanket around her, most likely Boo Radley. Miss Maudie explained this as "unexpected company"(73). This is a perfect explanation of what happened during that situation. You never would have guessed by all of the bad stories about Boo that he would have done something to help someone. (4.5/5) because I had specific text references because I used a quote and I cited it. I also had a long enough response and correct information. I also used correct character names and complete sentences and capitalization.

    Summary:
In chapter 6 what happened was the kids snuck up to the Radley house and Nathan Radley had heard them and came out with a shotgun. The kids run off and Jem looses his pants in the fence. When he goes back later that night he finds them folded up and he found that someone had actually sewn them. In chapter 7 the knot hole in the tree that the kids had been getting presents from was filled in. Also Jem tells Scout what happened when he went back to get his pants. In chapter 8 it started to snow and Miss Maudie's house caught on fire and everyone was outside helping.
