Chapter Ten -
ReplyDeleteIn this chapter, the title finally starts to make sense. After Christmas the kids are taken to shoot with their new guns but their father tells them he’d rather have them shoot tins than mockingbirds. Scout goes to Miss Maudie for clarification on this, she agrees that “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 103). I think this quote is really important to the chapter and the book as a whole because it represents life back then. Not only is it inhumane to shoot innocent mockingbirds, but most of the things they did back then were. The concept of killing a mockingbird is just the same as discrimination and having slavery just because of someone’s skin color. Also Boo Radley is really innocent but he has nasty rumors going around about him for no reason. He never gives any harm and he's actually really nice, which is why it is wrong that people assume horrible things about him.

I give myself a 5/5 because my entry is over 100 words, I used complete sentences and capitalization and everything that it said on the rubric.
DeleteYou have a beautiful blended quote. Also the quote is really important to the story so I think it's good that you pointed this out. Great job Samantha :)
DeleteChapter 9: In this chapter, Atticus reminds me of myself. At the end, Atticus is talking to Jack and Scout is listening around the corner. Somehow Atticus knows that Scout is listening and Scout even says "I realized that he wanted me to hear every word he said" (93). Sometimes I say things because I know someone I want to hear it, is listening. I say it loudly or near them so they can hear it.
ReplyDeleteI have a specific textual reference. Also I have at least 100 words. My grammar is right and I have proper citation that is properly blended. I give myself 5/5 because I didn't know what else to write about the chapter and I didn't elaborate that much. But everything else is good.
Morgan, great connection! I do the same thing when I want someone to know they messed up. You definitely get a 5/5 :)
DeleteAtticus does it so Scout knows to go to him when all of this is going on. He wants Scout to know what's right from wrong and that he isn't bad. So Scout comes to her own conclusion about all the drama that's going on. I do it because I want the person to hear if they did something that bothered me or upset me.

ReplyDeleteChapter 9: One Word
ReplyDeleteOne word I would use to describe chapter 9 would be stressful. This is because when her Uncle Jack comes to visit, he automatically sits her down and lectures her not to swear in front of him. Also, she goes to the Finch Landing to visit her aunt where she has to put up with Alexandria and Francis. Alexandria insists that Scout should dress like a lady and be ladylike, which upsets Scout because she doesn’t want to be ladylike. She enjoys being more tomboy-ish. In addition, Francis is boring and doesn’t do anything adventurous or exciting. He, also, ends up calling Atticus a “nigger-lover” and Scout beats him up. Then Francis tells Uncle Jack that Scout beat him up and Scout gets in trouble for it. Therefore, this whole chapter describes how stressful it is for Scout to handle her family.
I would give my chapter journaling a 3.5. This is because I explain my reasoning for giving this chapter the word stressful nicely. However, even though I refer to specific scenes in the book I do not use quotes from the book. Other than that, my response is decent, and a good size.
I like how you fully explained why the word 'stressful' describes chapter 9.
DeleteI think you did a good job explaining why you think "stressful" was an important word in the chapter.

ReplyDeleteChapter 9:
ReplyDeleteIn chapter nine of "To Kill a Mocking Bird", Francis calls Atticus a N***** lover to Scout. Scout asked why people were saying that about her dad and what it meant to him. Atticus replied by saying that "if I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again"(Lee100). This is important to the novel because Atticus was trying to explain to Scout not to be racist, without coming out and saying it because she wouldn’t understand. Atticus is not racist, and it is proved because the person he is working with as a lawyer is a black person. He is trying to inform Scout that black people are should be treated equally, and not to listen to what the other people in town say about him.
I think that your quote is wonderfuly blended and that you have a wonderful responce
DeleteI would give myself a 5/5 because it is at least 100 words, I have proper and important cited quotes, as well as proper grammar and punctuation.
DeleteA word that has widespread connection to the story, time period, and setting is reckon (or reckoned). It is so often used in the novel, such as "I said I reckoned so" (Lee 79) and "I reckon they fit alright" (Lee 79) that it has become part of the language of the book. It's a very southern term, meaning to establish by counting or calculation or conclude after calculation, the be of the opinion. The deep south has it's own foreign language that is unknown to us yankees and I rarely hear it unless someone is talking in a joking manner like the south.
ReplyDeleteChapter 10:
ReplyDeleteIf Scout were to return to school the next day, I think she would brag about her father shooting the rabid dog, even though she was told not to. Being slightly older than most of the other fathers in the town, they were immensely surprised when Atticus was able to shoot the dog at such a great distance. This would make Scout want to tell everyone how “cool” of a person her father was, despite his age."I saw that, One-Shot Finch!", said Maudie after seeing Atticus's perfect shot. (Lee, 97)
I would rate myself a 4/5 because I have good grammar, specific textual references and a properly blended quote. However, I don't think my response was over 100 words.
I would give you a 4.5 because even though your response may not be 100 words the evidence and analysis you use is good. Therefore, I would grade you a 4.5.
DeleteChapter Naming: I think that a good name for chapter 9 would be "Fight". Because scout almost got in a fiht with Cecil Jacobs because he called atticus a "n" lover and she is being made fun of . Then at the family christmas party at finches landing there is Aunt Alexandra's grandson Francis and he gets on scouts nerves. Then Francis calls Atticus an "N" lover and scout curses at him and beats him up and the criticisim comes from the family about how scout is a tom boy.
ReplyDeleteI Think that I would geive myself a 3/5 because I do not have a quote and I do not have good grammer
DeleteI would give my self 5/5 because my entry is over 100 words and I have a perfectly blended quotation.
ReplyDeleteChapter Name: The Game Changer
ReplyDeleteIn this chapter, Atticus's job totally changes because he is now representing a black guy, Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a white woman and this is going to completely change Atticus's life.
~"'Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his life time that affects him personally'" (Lee 101).
For this quote, it explains how that he knew he would get a challenged case and how it is always going to be in the back of his head, it will always help him make decisions during his life time.
~"'You know, I'd hoped to get through life without a case of this kind, but John Taylor pointed at me and said, 'You're It''" (Lee117).
This quote explains how he never would've thought that a case like this was going to be giving to him.
Grade: I give my self a 3.5 because I have proper citation, and specific textual evidence.

DeleteGood job Bailey, your citations are great, you have good evidence, and it is a good length.
DeleteChapter 10- In Chapter ten there is a mad dog that appears wandering down the street towards the Finch's house. To handle this, “Calpurnia calls Atticus who returns home with Heck Tate. The sheriff of Maycomb, Heck brings a rifle and asks Atticus to shoot the dog (Lee 93)”. If i could come up with a name for this chapter, I’d call it, “The big surprise”. I’d name it that because, when Atticus shoots the dog the kids were surprised with what happened. The name, “The big surprise” would fit right in with what happened and it would explain to the reader what may happen or make the reader read on to find out what the big surprise is.
ReplyDeleteNick Samele
Nice Landon, you just have to add a little bit of punctuation and grammar.
ReplyDeleteI would name chapter nine the ‘Christmas Courtroom’. It incorporates the Christmas settings at the beginning of the chapter, as well as the conflict between Scout and Francis. Francis starts the argument about Dill and how he doesn’t have any parents, then calls Atticus a ‘nigger-lover’ When Scout finally gets mad enough to punch Francis, Uncle Jack immediately blames Scout and pins her to the floor. Later, Uncle Jack finally asked “What was your side of it Scout?” (Lee 114) and goes to punish Francis and talk to Atticus. Only Francis would have been punished if each of them had their time to speak.
ReplyDeleteChapter 9
ReplyDeleteI think this chapter should be called “The Bug.” This chapter starts with Skeeter getting ready to go on her date with Hillys relative, but her brother has his new college “girlfriend” over. Skeeters mother wants her to stay and talk to the guest but she has to lie to her mother saying “Hilly’s got...a stomach bug,” (Stockett 134) After she escapes her mother and after a few stops of having to restart her father's truck she makes it to Hillys. Hilly’s attractive but rude cousin is there and Hilly helps her fix her makeup and hair. After the disastrous date, Aibileen makes up for it by agreeing to the interview for Skeeters book, all because of Hilly.
I give myself a 5/5 because I put in quotes, sited them and wrote a good amount or describe the chapters events.
Chapter 9
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 9 , the Scout notices that the her father is much older in the comparison to the other father in the town . In the book it says that the '' Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we start is no reason for us not to try to win '' Atticus said''.I believe that the life '' You're more like Atticus than your mother ' he said . You're also growing out of your pants a little '' I believe that the life in the book shows that shows the emotions between the characters and the main purpose of the book.
The title that i would give this chapter is One Shot because Scout and Jem find out the their dad is a very good shot with a rifle when Atticus ends up putting down the sick dog that is wandering the neighborhood. Miss Maudie told them how Atticus's “nickname was Ol’ One-Shot” (Lee 98) when he was a boy. She also said how “Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time” (Lee 98). This title fits the chapter because it is when the main characters, Scout and Jem, find out about how good of a shot there dad used to be and how he still is one.
ReplyDeleteI give myself a 5/5 since i had more than 100 words, used text references, complete sentences and all the other things included on the rubric.
Deletei was aso serprised that he shot the dog with one bulet. he seems like a very layed back man and i would have never thout the was able to do that.
DeleteA great title name for chapter 10 of To Kill A Mockingbird would be "Hidden Talent". Hidden Talent would be a good title name for chapter 10 because Scout starts to get a little embarrassed that her dad Atticus is so much older than the other dads and likes to read instead of do outdoor activities. Scout finds out though that the dad does have a special talent which is shooting and had the "deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time" (Lee 98). Scout becomes very excited that her father has such a good talent but Jem informs her that she shouldn't tell anyone because obviously Atticus want this kept a secret or else everyone would know. That is why Hidden Talents would be a perfect title name for chapter 10.
ReplyDeleteI would give myself a 5/5 for this because it was a good length and had evidence from the text. I also think I had correct grammer.
I like how Sydney combines the quote in the sentence she doesn't use the whole quote but just the important stuff.
DeleteChp 10 One Word: One word that captures chp 10 would be the word “secret” because in the beginning of the chapter scout talked about how she wasn't really proud of atticus’ past times while most the other fathers in the town would hunt or fish and atticus would either read etc. However later on there was a mangy stray dog in the road at the front of atticus’ house so atticus brought the sheriff by who told atticus to take his rifle and shoot the dog himself. So atticus took the rifle and with one quick shot brought the dog down. Scout was later told by the sheriff that atticus was the best shot in the county and with this information scout was proud of atticus and wanted to brag to all her friends etc. However Jem told her to keep this a secret because if atticus didn't tell them then he probably didn't want it out there.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that secret is an important word in the chapter, but why wouldn't you use the phrase one shot kill, you know bend the rules a little, use more than one word.
DeleteYour description of the events that took place were very good and your basic summary was very accurate. The connection you made that would be the reason for why the one word description would be "secret" made good sense. The only thing I would recommend would be to add a quote.
DeleteAs a grade i would give myself a 4/5 for this response because i forgot some capitalization and i am lacking a quote from the text
DeleteChapter 10 - Quotable Quotes
ReplyDelete“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Harper Lee 103) This quote that Atticus preaches to Jem is a well known quote for this book. This quote is so important to the book and the novel because, I’m going out on a limb here, it will set up the rest of the book, considering the people who represent mockingbird’s. As mockingbird’s are innocent and don’t do anything to harm anything else. The people who represent these mockingbird’s are unidentifiable at this moment. But I believe that the first time they are introduced to the book, they will be known as the mockingbird’s.
I like how you kind of set up the rest of the book with that quote I can see the whole book based on that quote.
DeleteChapter 9: Quotable Quotes: Atticus has to defend a black man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a white woman and he knows that he won’t win the case. He has to find a way to explain to Scout what’s happening and why he’s defending Tom, “If I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” I think this part of the book was especially important because it teaches Scout some values. She learns that sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do, and Atticus shows her that all jobs have bad experiences and no job is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI give myself a 5/5 because I had a quote from the text which was blended correctly, I supported the quote with evidence from the book, and I had correct spelling and grammar.
DeleteI would rate you a 4.9 because because you had good textual evidence and support but you didn't cite the quote. Overall very impressed because of you nice effort

ReplyDeleteI would title this chapter Tom Robinson because the chapter is mainly about him. Scout’s dad has to represent Tom Robinson in court. Throughout the chapter they briefly describe him and Scout overhears some stuff. Atticus was talking to Jack about Tom Robinson and how he is innocent but doomed. Atticus says “the only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells” (Lee117). Since he is a black man he will probably go to jail even if he didn’t commit anything.
ReplyDeleteI would give myself a 5 out of 5 because I answered all parts of the question and added a quote
Chapter 10-Quotable quotes
ReplyDelete"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em." (Harper Lee 175) This quote really shows the personality of Scout. sHe is very intelligent and considering how smart she is it shows how she saw right through any kind of back track. She wanted to show that with kids they can dissect everything and get right to the bottom of it.
I would give myself a 4 out of 5 because I had all the necessary pieces but I blended the quote incorrectly.
DeleteGreat title Landon! I think it showed a lot that Atticus is fighting for what's right even though chances are he won't win the case and he knows that but it doesn't stop him from defending Tom!
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 10 Atticus shoots the rabid dog that is running through there neighborhood and he does it with one shot which surprises everyone. After this event Calpurina explains that Atticus was an amazing marksman as a young man and Scout got super excited about this"You were a little to the right"(Lee 96). I think if Scout were to go to school the next day she would brag to everyone at school about what her dad did and why he is such a good shot.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 10 Atticus kill the a dog that turns out be the Rabidy dog. He kills the dog with one shot. The aim of Atticus sperises every one. once Calpurina tells the kids that he was and amassing marksmen scout gets exited. they also mention “Shooting all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Harper Lee 103) and if she was going to talk about it at school she would brag about it.
ReplyDeleteI would give myself a 7 out of 10 because my quot was not well blended and it is not that long.
Chapter 9 Response: Chapter name: Realization
ReplyDelete-I think that this chapter should be named realization. I decided this because Atticus realized that "every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally, this one's mine, I guess" (Lee, 76). This passage shows that Atticus realizes that the case about the black man is a very big point in his life. He knows that he has something to prove and if he is successful than people will possibly follow him and his views. Though, if he is not successful than people might loss respect for him. Also, in this chapter, Scout and Uncle Jack realize things about each other. Jack realized that Scout is hot-tempered and unlady-like and Scout realized that Jack is bad with children.
-I gave myself a 4.9 out of 5 because I cited well and included lots of description, though I might of made a punctuation error.
I'm doing chapter naming and the name I would give it would be "One-Shot Finch" for chapter 10 because in this chapter it revolves around guns and shooting them and in one part it shows Atticus Finch shooting the mad dog "I saw that, One-Shot Finch!" Atticus wheeled around and faced miss Maudie. They looked at each other without saying anything, and Atticus got into the sheriff,s car."(Lee 97). This shows how good Atticus was and he earned a Nick name for it but still wanted it to be a secret. I would give my self a 3 out of 5 cause I had all of the needed information just the blending was off.
