The article "Suicide Bombers Do Not Show Real Bravery" is about how selfish suicide bombers are and it is just an easy escape. They are leaving the world as a coward and make a point of it to get attention by also killing many innocent people. Suicide bombers are just selfish and awful, they do not deserve the title of being brave, "real bravery would be to stay home and defend family, friends and community from military attack, risking capture or death by their enemy's hands, not by their own" (Suicide Bombers Do Not Show Real Bravery). Our example of bravery in our group is to do what you think is right no matter what by pushing yourself past your limits. These people are the opposite, they know it is wrong to kill innocent people and they only think of themselves.

DeleteIn the article "Blindness Never Stopped Him In Battle, and It Won't Stop Him Now" by John Carpenter is about a Harry Messmore, who was a young second lieutenant in 1944 who was assigned to take out a German pillbox that was protecting a French harbor where Nazi submarines came in to resupply for battle. He led his men and their heavy guns into firing position during the night with a thick layer of fog. When his men where blinded, Messmore could have waited for the fog to clear but instead, crawled on his belly underneath it toward the pillbox in front of his own guns. When he was close enough, he told his men to open fire and watch the shells land, calling out adjustments until they hit their mark. The Legion of Honor award to American soldiers who distingushed themselves in World War II included an award to Messmore. Unfortunately the Messmore was never able to see it. "When his own personal fog - a combination of macular degeneration and glaucoma - rolled in five years ago, no one would have blamed Messmore for giving up. Already retired, he was still volunteering his medical expertise diagnosing difficult cases at Hines Veteran's Administration Hospital. Everyone would have understood if he politely told him he could no longer work." Messmore could have easily had a nice retirement, but instead did his best to move forward and keep on trying to tackle things himself, even if he did need an assistant. Messmore shows that bravery is knowing to tackle his problems himself and not wait for time to fix things, letting life take its own course, and he always remembers that if one job isn't done today, there is always going to be tomorrow to try again.

"Army Captian Awarded Metal of Honor for bravery in afganistan fight ". President obama just awarded a army captain the Metal of Honor for his brave service in afganistan When Barack Obama handed the man the metal he said "you are a remarkable role model for all of us and we are very greatful for your service". ReplyDeleteCousine was brave enough to stick up to police officer, even though he could possibly end up serving more time in jail than he already was. The 'problem officers', as they're called, beat up inmates that are in shackles. When they're in these shackles, they cannot defend themselves. Most of the inmates have not done anything wrong (while in jail), but they are still beaten by these 'problem officers'. Cousine had the courage to make a statement out loud, saying, "You get in my face, I'm going to fight back," Cousine said. "You swing at me, I'm going to knock you off your feet. And you pull a gun, I'll kill you." He had outstanding courage in order to say this, because the police could have taken this as a threat and beaten him up anyways, regardless of what he said.
It takes a lot of courage in order to fight the law, because if you swim against the laws current, you may find yourself dead.
I give myself a 4 because I thoroughly explained my blended quote, and why it was connected to bravery. I also gave a short definition on what real bravery is, not over-explaining it.
DeleteThis article could easily resemble Atticus because of his bravery to do something that is going to affect him personally. Like Cousine, he does something knowing he is probably will not win in his goals, but tries anyways. It is something most people wouldn't dream of doing, but when you feel like you need to stand up for someone or something that has happened that you don't feel is right, is when the true bravery comes out.

ReplyDelete2. Demi Lovato is one of the bravest women out there. She has not only grown up in the media's eye but she has had many struggles and obstacles she has had to overcome. Demi could have made up stories or not have told a soul about what she's been through like many celebrities, but she chose to be brave and tell her story and journey. In one article from "The Stir", it states how "Lovato's been unflinchingly brave and open about her struggles" (Sharps 1). She could have kept it all a secret but instead "she told the public that her treatment was for bulimia and self-injury, and she joined forces with Seventeen magazine to talk to young girls about "the pressure to be perfect" (Sharps 1). In the article, "Demi tweets picture of herself without makeup" the author describes how brave that was. Demi was trying to encourage bravery from other girls too by tweeting "Ladies, be brave today.. take off your make-up and stop using those filters!! WE are beautiful!!!" (D'Zurilla). Many girls and celebrities wouldn't be caught dead without wearing makeup. But Demi was brave enough to show her naked, beautiful face and encourage other girls to do the same. Demi isn't just brave for herself but she's brave for others. In the article "Demi opens up about heavy use of cocaine, alcohol" the author talks about how open and brave Demi has been about her recent issues. She pushed herself past her limits and got the help she needed for her issues. She got help and is helping others by doing what she thinks is always right by opening up about her struggles and not hiding them. Demi Lovato is incredibly brave and as a result of her bravery, she creates bravery in others.

These LAPD officers put thier life in danger to protect and save other people's lives. LAPD officer, "Obaidee was one of 41 officers to be awarded the LAPD's Purple Heart for injuries suffered on the job." This quote from the article and my quote go along well, because my quote is, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." My quote is basically telling you that bravery is the courage to continue, even when you fail. This LADP officer, pushed through and faced his challenges even if he knows he'll fail.
Evaluation: I give myself a 4, because my definition of bravery was real good and it fit the quote I took from my article and the quote was blended well.
DeleteThis story relates to Atticus, because just as "these LAPD officers put their life in danger to protect and save other people's lives," he was putting his life on the line to protect Tom Robinson from the rape that he was falsely accused of. He may not actually be being killed, but the reciprocation's of helping him might be worse than death itself.

DeleteMartin's bravery mad him push him self past his limits and comfortably. This is because he lost 7 horse in a barn fire and his Olympic horse was one of the few the survived. But than a week after that his father got hit by a car in a road race and was killed. His reaction to this was "But I got over all that and regrouped and here we are with a good chance" (Martin's bravery could pay dividends). Martin has a good opportunity to do good at the Olympics and I hope he will.

ReplyDeleteThe article "Martin's bravery could pay dividends" is about how a man, named Boyd Martin, saved two horses from a blazing inferno. Even, though many other horses had died, these two horse competed in the Olympics. After this horrific event his dad had passed away in a terrible cycling accident. He keeps his head up high and says that he "got over all that and regrouped and here we[they] are with a good chance." This shows bravery because he is facing all these obstacles all at once but still overcoming them. This ties in with my definition of bravery because he is facing his obstacles and he isn't scared of them, and still getting past them and moving on.
I would give myself a 3.5 because I think I could summarized the article a little better and had a better analysis. However, I meet all the requirements.

DeleteIn the article "California Briefing", sixteen police officers were given a medal of honor for their bravery. Ten of them were in a shootout with a man who opened fire on police with his toddler in his arms. 1 died during the confrontation. 4 are honored for saving people from a fire and 2 more for "confronting violent suspects". I believe this is bravery because they risked their lives to try and save the girl, as well as saving people from a fire and confrontation of a violent suspect.

ReplyDelete2) A marines squad was abushed and a hostile grenade was thrown at them. In order to save his brothers in arms, he jumped on the grenade and took the entire impact. While in critical condition, he still fired at hostiles and forced them to retreat. H was given the Navy Cross, "the Navy Cross is second to the Medal of Honor in recognition of exceptional bravery". It would have costed him his comrades, which to him, was his brothers. So he took the grenade for them, and accepted death for his family. However, he survived the blast as still shot at the hostiles to push them back. Until it was over, he finally collapsed of his injuries. So he didn't give up until it was done.

Delete"Elite Units in U.S. Military to Admit Women" is an article Jennifer Steinhauer in the NY Times. She has written this article about the decision in mid January to open up combat positions and special forces careers in the military (such as the Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Green Berets, and Marine infantry) to women. Since 1994, these positions that include infantry, artillery, armor, and other combat roles even though women have seen and been documented in combat because they are "attached" to these units. By allowing women into combat, "it will strengthen our country both morally and militarily" Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) stated in the interview conducted by Steinhauer. The reason why she said 'morally' is because of the amount of sexual assaults on women in the military by men. Throughout the past year, there has been a reported 26000 assaults and many officials believe that is because of the constant inequality between men and women in the military. Out of the 280k women in the military, over a hundred have been killed in combat within the last year and more have faced open fire but don't get any recognition until now. The bravery of our women in the armed forces is immense to be able to face what threatens our country on a daily basis. The women who deploy overseas are the ones that we should look up to because they show the courage to fight every day.

This shows that the suicide bombers are taking the easy way out. I agree with the article because these bombers die before they can be convicted for the crime. They don't live long enough to see the consequences of their actions. My groups definition of bravery was "Bravery is sticking up for yourself, your beliefs, and others. Never back down or give up but move on when necessary." These people are not brave because they are not looking out for others by killing innocent people. They may be sticking up for their beliefs but killing innocent people and yourself so that you don't have to deal with the consequences is nowhere near brave.

I think that your definition of bravery shows what I think the kids in the book need to learn. Right now in the book I think that the kids are just starting to realize that they need to win such as with the Tom Robinson case. So I think that the kids need to learn this.
DeleteIn the article 'Blindness Never Stopped Him in Battle, and it Won't Stop Him Now' A man called Harry Messmore was in World War 2 and when attacking the Germans, a thick fog rolled over the battlefield and made both sides blind. Instead of waiting for the fog to clear, Messmore pushed himself beyond his physical and mental limits, even though he might have been afraid, to lead his artillerymen to the target German pillbox and bombed them. The Germans gave up shortly after. Messmore won the Bronze Star for bravery and a Gold Medallion for his work in the Medical field. This was a feat of bravery because instead of giving on the mission that his team was given, he lead them and accomplished his task.

DeleteSuicide bombing isnt a suicidul act, obviously they die, but its not because they have bad lives, or they dont want to live anymore, its moreso based on what they are willing to do for their country and in their case it means they are willing to give their lives and wellbeing as living humans for their family back home, so they give their lives hoping that their actions will be able to protect the ones they love.

Richard Weinmaster who took a leap of bravery to save his squad leader and fellow Marines. My groups definition of bravery was bravery is not just facing your fears, it is also the ability to stand out and try new things. It is having the moral courage even if you might not win the battle. This is exactly what Weinmaster did, he knew that he would not win the battle but he knew that he could save lives. He also showed bravery by not giving up he was "seriously wounded, he continued to fire at the attackers, forcing them to flee". He faced his fears knowing that he wouldn't win and he kept fighting to keep going. He truly showed bravery and for his act of courage he earned the Navy Cross for a Medal of Honor.

He agreed to be captured by a gang in order to free other hostages, he managed to free the hostage and take control of the armed gang members, "grabbing the man`s pistol and inserting his left hand in front of the hammer of the gun to keep it from firing." DeleteBravery is about not being afraid of death of failure. Sgt. Yukio Okutsu was a Asian American solider who risked his life for America even though he was asian. Durring a battle he threw granades into a machine gun nest to take them out to clear the path for his fellow troops. " Bullets slamming into his helmet briefly knocked him out, but he recovered and charged a third nest." He was very brave but could not recive a medal because he was Asian and we were fighting the Japanese. 50 years later he was able to recive his medal. It was real brave of him to go up there in front of the world and recieve it from Bill Clinton.

He knows that it is possible he could get hurt however they know what is right and what is fair. I agree with this statement because bravery is dangerous and people go out of their way to help others making sacrifices
DeleteI agree with Riley on how this connects to "To Kill A Mockingbird." I think Atticus knows the consequences to defending Tom Robinson could be huge and he knows people are going to say stuff about him but I think it is brave of him to do it. The police officer volunteered to do something that not a lot of people would do and Atticus offered to defend someone that not a lot of lawyers would defend and they both did it because they were so brave and they knew it was the best thing to do.

The artical "Donald Rudolph" does not represent bravery because Donald doesnt show bravery in his act. He single-handedly destroying Japanese machine-gun positions in the battle to recapture the Philippines. He did not show bravery because technecally anyone could destroy a minigun turret if you had the equpiment, also obviously you'd be afraid to be up agenst a minigun turret knownig your life is on the line but your not pushing yourself hard enough or achieving any of your dreams in the process, and i sincerely doubt this guys dream was to single handedly disable that minigun... Bravery all leads up to you being able to chase your dreams, he did not accomplish this in his actions.

DeleteIn the article "Chicago police honor officers for bravery" Officer David Hickey was on a chase for drug dealers with his team when he got shot in the leg. Three months later Hickey returned to work and even ran in the Chicago marathon. Him and his team members were all "awarded the Police Medal, the department’s highest honor". Hickey was also given "the Police Blue Star Award". These awards that they got showed how much the people appreciate them and how they were brave. They showed how bravery is to push yourself to and beyond your physical and mental limits and in doing that you allow yourself to chase your dreams even through your afraid.

I like what you did here the connection I see would propyl be to Mrs. Dubose because this seen had to do with a drug deal and she did take to much pain medication then she was supposed to.
DeleteThe article Medal of Honor recipient visits Chicago was about a young solder who fought in the Afghanistan war was honored for his bravery on the battle field. He ricked his life to save some of the men in his platoon who where wounded on the battle field. One of the men in his platoon believes that "Giunta's actions in the moonlit mountains went beyond the basic skills and training the entire platoon received." They feel that he went beyond what any other solder would of done and risked his life to save his brothers.

DeleteThis post reminds me of Atticus because he is risking his and his family's reputation by defending a black person. Even though he knows the risk he is taking he is being brave by still doing it even though he knows he probably wont win. The only difference is that the bravery Atticus is showing is in his job and he cant physically get hurt like the man in the post did.

This article shows bravery because in the marines you need to have courage to keep pushing and not give up and have bravery to get through the scary things that happen in war. In the article they say "On a July 8 foot patrol, Weinmaster's squad was ambushed. Weinmaster used his body to protect his squad leader and other Marines from the blast of an enemy grenade". This shows bravery because he had the courage to stand up and put his life on the line for someone else, that takes some serious balls!
i can connect this to atticus risking his reputation to save a black man that is innocent like how the marine dove on the grenade to save his fellow marines.

The article is about Lance Cpl. Richard Weinmaster and his heroics that saved his platoon leader and other marines. Bravery is the ability to do the right thing, helping others, and never back down or give up. The article "Chicago Police honors officers for bravery" is about an officer named David Hickley who was shot and wounded by a high speed chase which ended in a crash and gunfire among the officers. Hickley, despite his injuries was able to return to police work 3 months after he was shot. Not only did he return to service "he even ran the Chicago marathon in October 2011." He also has been awarded the Police Medal which is the highest honor in the department as well as a blue star for officers that have been injured in the line of duty. Therefore Officer Hickley has shown many examples of bravery. Many would find it difficult to go back into something that you were almost nearly killed from. However Hickley has faced his fears. Also Hickley has gotten past his injuries by also running a marathon displaying that he is stronger now. As you can see this officer has certainly displayed bravery for himself and his department.

DeleteIn the article, "2 Kids Lauded For Saving Lives" by Tracy Dell'Angela, two kids named Jill and Brian, saved the lives of two toddlers, on separate occasions. They are both part of their school's safety patrol, and we outside while children were crossing the street. In one instance, for Jill, she jumped in front of a car and a small child. Then Brian ran after a 2 year old boy who left his stroller, and ran towards the street. Jill had talked of the situation saying,"I was an inch away from being hit by the car. I didn't think I was going to make it." Part of her had a feeling that she was going to be hit, but she still showed courage by saving the young girl. Bravery is not just facing your fears, it is also the ability to stand out and try new things. It is also having the moral courage, even if you won't win the battle. She didn't know if she was going to be hit or not, but still showed the ability to do things that brave.

What I think bravry is knowing your going to get beat but you just keep fiting. ReplyDeleteThe article Chicago Police honors officers for bravery is about a group of officers that worked very hard to catch a group of drug dealers. As a team they worked very hard together and went through many difficult situations in their chase to stop these drug dealers from continuing. In one instance the team "forced the getaway vehicle to stop,but suspects open fired, wounding Hickey". This article goes with my group's definition of bravery which is to show courage in any situation and to have the ability to not back down because in many circumstances these officers could of backed down when they knew it was going to be very dangerous. Instead, the officers kept together and showed their bravery in their persistance to catch the bad guys.
ReplyDeleteThe article "Police Official Wins Bravery Award" is about a deputy police chief named Sam Mangiarlardi who won a silver star for his bravery by the American Police Hall of Fame. The deputy volunteered to be a hostage to a gang member so he could free another hostage and then over take the gangster by overpowering him. His training definitely came into play, "grabbing the man`s pistol and inserting his left hand in front of the hammer of the gun to keep it from firing." I think it's impressive that the police offer was able to stay calm and remember all the steps he learned years ago when it actually came into play and meant something. I think it relates to my definition of bravery which is having the strength to push through any obstacle and not give up on yourself or others. The police officer's actions definitely relate to my definition of bravery because he was able to have the strength to push through the tense situation and he didn't give up on himself because he kept fighting back and he didn't give up on others because he was able to get another hostage free.

After his squad leader was downed by enemy fire, Timothy Williams took command, leading a counterattack, killing five Taliban and rescuing the wounded squad leader. he carried the wounded Marine over 300 yards of uneven terrain to the medical evacuation platform. hes courage and integrity describe him by doing the right think when no one is watching and also facing the real of what will think everyone of him he manage to wet everyone to safety also he manage to face his fear the one that he must conquer.

It goes into thanking all the firefighters, police officers, and others that go out of their way to help others and save lives. The article talks about bravery by saying how we should "honor those who were felled on that day"(American Bravery). This quotation reveals bravery by talking about how we should honor those that were brave enough to risk their lives to save others. This proves our definition of bravery which is that bravery is the courage to keep going even when it is dangerous or against public opinion. In 9/11 many people died, including many of the responders that were trying to save others.

DeleteThe article I read is about a doctor and his bravery during world war 2. It explains the courage you need to make it through the battle. As a doctor I assume that wasn't easy because people rely on you to save their life. To me, bravery is second guessing yourself but fighting through the courage to proceed anyways."Sitting at a conference table in the library of the Loyola University Medical Center recently, recalling stories not only from the war but from his long career in medicine and medical research, it was readily apparent that there is still a lot of that young second lieutenant in this 87-year-old man." This quote shows how much courage and success this doctor showed throughout wars and even beyond that. This man received and award for his bravery, that shows true dedication to his carreer. In my eyes that should be rewarded.

DeleteI would have to relate this response to the character Atticus. Basically, in your response the Doctor strives to better and help the lives of others before himself. In the story, Atticus actually goes out of the way to stand up for a Black man and he knows that he could probably lose his case but he makes sure not to give up in the process. The only difference between these 2 examples of bravery is that Atticus is risking his reputation and the doctor is risking his life in World War II.

He was a young second lieutenant in 1944, assigned to take out a German pillbox. In the story he came up with so much bravery that it would take all the men in the worlds bravery for me to do what he did. Harry “led his men and their heavy guns into a firing position under the cover of night. But as the first light brought their unsuspecting target into view, a thick layer of fog crawled in from the ocean, blanketing the countryside. With his artillerymen blind, Messmore might have waited for the fog to clear. Instead, he crawled on his belly underneath it, toward the target pillbox and in front of his own guns. When he was close enough, he ordered them to open fire and watched the shells land, calling out adjustments until they hit their mark. The Germans gave up in short order and the mission was accomplished.” In this quote from the article explaining his courageous act, it shows what true bravery is to me. True bravery is having the strength to push through any obstacle and not give up on yourself or on others. The article I choose "Six-year-old sets example of bravery" displays the extreme amount of Bravery a young 6-year old boy had when attempting to save his 2-year old sister. After his sister slipped off a bank into a river, the boy knew he had to act fast and save her. With his full effort, he jumped in the river to go rescue her "however he failed in his endeavor" and unfortunately the siblings faced death. Even though the boy died as well as his sister, he displayed an amazing amount of bravery because he had the strength to overcome any fears in the way and he didn't give up on himself or his sister. The article talked about how it “would be a fitting tribute” to remember the people of 9/11 then it would be to make a monument for them. It said that we should never forget the feelings of loss and pain that has shaped the “greatest country on the planet”. Our group's definition of bravery was; bravery is the courage to keep gong agent people’s opinion. This applies to the article because the US keeped going when the terrorists thought we should not.

I read the article about Lance Cpl. Richard Weinmaster, a U.S marine who received the navy cross for valorous actions. While walking in a 8 man foot patrol they were ambushed by Taliban fighters, the fighters threw a grenade in front of the group when Richard saw this he used his body to protect his squad leader and other soldiers. After the blast and enduring serious injuries Richard got up and fired at the enemy fighters to scare them away. After they fled Richard quickly collapsed and died from his injuries, he saved several marines that day. Our group's definition is " Bravery is showing courage in any situation and having the ability to not back down". I would say our definition of bravery fits this story very well because Richard showed he had courage in a dangerous situation and did not back down even when he sustained serious injuries.

ReplyDeletePresident Obama and Vice President Biden honor 34 brave police officers for their acts of justice that risked their lives, including a cop from Chicago who intervened during an "armed bank robbery". The police officers honored at the White House event today is a reminder of those who survive the challenges that police officers face, especially those who had died in the service. Although the police officers at the ceremony endured much, they had the "courage to keep going against people's opinion (our groups definition of bravery)" because their families may had been against them continuing being a police officer in a dangerous city.
I give myself a 4 because I made a very developed response explaining the article and blending in my groups definition with a thoughtful reason as to why our groups definition works.
